Baseball's Shutout in Second Game Leads To Split Over Mount Union

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- In a very important series to help determine placement in the Ohio Athletic Conference with the conference starting in just a few weeks, the John Carroll baseball team split their doubleheader matchup against Mount Union.

The Purple Raiders used a five-run ninth inning in Game One to aid in a 7-2 victory as the Blue Streak offense failed to muster much offense. Game Two provided a much different outcome, as John Carroll's stellar pitching, led by starter Maxwell Schumaker, was the difference maker as they handled Mount Union, 4-0. It was JCU's third-ever shutout over Mount Union and first at Schweickert Field in the series history.

Game One

The scoring began in the second inning with Mount Union's Joey Procop striking first courtesy of an RBI single. Moments later, Chase Angotti was hit by a pitch from Blue Streak starter Jamon Higley to advance to first and load the bases. With two outs and bases loaded, Alex Stegman blasted one to right field, only to be robbed by a diving catch in the gap by John Carroll's Sean Connolly to keep the deficit at 1-0.

A solo home run by the Purple Raider's Zack Mazza began the third inning, the first of two home runs as he increased the Mount Union lead to 2-0. Higley would answer by earning three straight outs. Meanwhile, John Carroll's offense would continue to struggle as they remained scoreless despite having runners in scoring position.

The pitching ramped up the next five innings as both Higley and Mount Union's Chuck Hawley traded off strong outings at the mound. In seven innings pitched, Higley finished with seven strikeouts while giving up just two runs against 26 Purple Raider batters. Meanwhile, following a pitching change as Hawley subbed in for Brady Hansen, Hansen proceeded to strikeout two Blue Streak batters in five innings pitched, which was enough to earn the victory moving him to 2-0 on the season.

Heading into the top of the ninth with Mount Union leading 2-0, the Purple Raiders eliminated any hope of a John Carroll comeback with a five run inning. Following a pitching change as Samuel Basso subbed in for Austin Miller, an RBI single from Mount Union's Andrew Mekeal increased the lead to 3-0. With bases loaded and two outs, Mazza would earn his second home run of the game to blow the game wide open.

An RBI double from John Carroll's Connor Mayle would end the shutout in the bottom of the ninth but the offense came too little, too late as the Purple Raiders came out on top.

Mayle and Erik Daugenti each had two hits for JCU.

Game Two

Following a lackluster first game, the Blue Streaks responded with a promising start to game two. Blue Streak pitcher Maxwell Schumaker set the tone early with a 1-2-3 inning. Joe Olsavsky would return the favor with a leadoff single to left field. Sean Connolly would proceed to bring Olsavsky in for the score with a double to right center field to give the Blue Streaks a 1-0 advantage.

After another 1-2-3 inning from Schumaker, Daugenti would single to right field to tack on another run for the Blue Streaks.

Mount Union would find their way on base for the first time in the third, but their time on base was short lived due to a phenomenal double play from the Blue Streak outfield to negate any scoring chance.

The bottom of the fifth began with John Carroll's Michael Persichetti earning a spot on first base after being hit by the pitch. Olsavsky followed it up with a two-run bomb to left field for his third homer of the season.

John Carroll's 4-0 lead was in jeopardy in the top of the sixth with Mount Union runners on second and third. Fortunately, Schumaker continued his excellent showing and earned the final out via a fly out to maintain the shutout. Schumaker finished with two strikeouts while allowing just three hits and one walk in a career-high six innings pitched.

Blue Streak's Henry Darrow picked up right where Schumaker left off in the seventh as he proceeded to strike out two Purple Raider hitters and ground out the third.

The remaining two innings were much of the same as Mount Union failed to muster any offense, with Darrow striking out the remaining two Mount Union batters to secure the 4-0 victory for John Carroll.

Following the split, John Carroll climbed to 20-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The Blue Streaks will remain in University Heights to take on Marietta in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22. The first game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
