Blue Streaks Soar Into Sole Possession of First In OAC With Strong Sweep of Muskies

WOOSTER, Ohio - After being rained out on Saturday, the John Carroll baseball took full advantage of some sunshine and a turf field as they went back to Wooster's Art Murray Field, and picked up two Ohio Athletic Conference wins against Muskingum in impressive fashion, 9-3 and 15-6, respectfully.

They also played Wooster at the field last Wednesday and defeated the Fighting Scots, 15-11, in just five innings.

The Blue Streaks continued that offensive showcase, as they tallied seven home runs and 34 hits combined in both games as well.

With the victories, JCU improved to 4-0 in OAC play and 15-6 overall as they sit in sole possession of first place in the conference.

Game 1

JCU relied heavily on the long ball in Game 1, as they out gunned Muskingum with four homers en route to the 9-3 win.

The four round trippers accounted for seven of the Blue Streaks' nine runs scored.

Connor Mayle hit two bombs to left field, while Bryce Holt and Erik Daugenti each put one over the fence.

The Muskies were able to jump on Matthew Aukerman early in the first inning. Nate Keiser poked a double down the left-field line that scored Wyatt Reeder.

After the early hiccup, Aukerman settled in and pitched six more innings while only allowing three total runs. He sat down nine Muskies via strikeout and did not surrender a walk. The nine strikeouts were his second highest total of the season.

Austin Miller came in from the bullpen to shut things down in the eighth and ninth innings. The sophomore allowed two hits and struck out a batter.

The Blue Streaks saw major offensive contributions from Joe Olsavsky as well, who tallied four hits in five at bats. He also scored two runs and recorded an RBI in the third inning which tied the game at 1-1.

Aukerman notched his fifth win of the season and still remains without a loss in 2023.

Game 2

Game 2 was a hit clinic by John Carroll as the blue and gold tallied a season high 19 hits.

Justin Hanley put the Blue Streaks on top early in the first inning, as he sent a two-run homer over the fence in left-center.

John Carroll never trailed in the game, but Muskingum hung around admirably for the first six innings.

The Fighting Muskies were able to narrow the deficit to two runs on two occasions, in both the fourth and the sixth inning.

That was as close as the Muskies would get in Game 2, as the Blue Streaks' bats exploded for eight unanswered runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

Jon Ambro got the starting nod in Game 2. The graduate student went five innings and gave up four runs on six hits while recording four strikeouts.

Henry Darrow was the first man out of the bullpen for John Carroll. Darrow pitched two and two-thirds innings in one run relief.

Garrett Siegel was called in from the bullpen for the remaining inning and a third.

Joe Olsavsky tallied a team-high five RBIs on three hits. Hanley was right behind him with four runs driven in on three hits.

Mayle and Holt each hit another solo home run, their third and second of the doubleheader respectively. They both had two hits and one RBI in Game 2.

Sean Connolly also had a productive evening at the plate. He reached base four times on three hits and a walk. The sophomore also scored three runs.

The baseball team is back on the diamond for a doubleheader vs. Capital on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm at Schweickert Field.
