Softball Stymied by Veteran Muskingum Squad in Sunday Sweep

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Hits were at a premium in a matchup of two Ohio Athletic Conference squads with strong pitching staffs on Sunday.

John Carroll went toe-to-toe with OAC powerhouse Muskingum in JCU's conference-opening series. But the Fighting Muskies showcased the talent that's powered four straight OAC Tournament appearances. Muskingum is a traditional softball powerhouse and has dominated the matchup all-time, now holding a 51-19-1 series advantage, including a 25-10 home mark.

The Blue Streaks dropped two losses to the Muskies, 6-2 and 1-0, in New Concord this afternoon.

John Carroll drops to 10-6 on the season.

Game 1
The long ball sunk the Blue Streaks in Sunday's opener. Muskingum opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first to take an early lead. The Fighting Muskies tallied back-to-back singles to start the second, soon scoring one run on a throwing error and another on a groundout, flying ahead, 3-0.

The Blue & Gold slimmed the deficit in the bottom half of the fourth. Kendall Trunzo and Alyssia Carmichael opened the frame with singles and advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. Kaylyn Odelli and Jess Lichota each tabbed sacrifice flies to bring JCU within one run, 3-2.

Unfortunately, that's as far as the Blue Streaks would get. The Fighting Muskies clubbed a key 2-run homer in the fifth for a pair of insurance runs and set the final score with a solo dinger by reigning First Team All-OAC infielder Haley Hawk in the sixth.

Muskingum's Hannah Smith, also an All-OAC selection last spring, performed brilliantly in the circle. The senior limited JCU to just two hits, striking out eight in the process.

Three errors harmed JCU, as just one of Danielle Orendi's three runs were earned. Orendi accepted the loss after the 4-inning outing.

Game 2
The second contest turned into a pitcher's duel, as hits were hard to come by in the early going.

John Carroll's bats were stymied by Madelyn Thomas, who retired the Blue Streaks in order in the first, second, third, and fourth innings.

Meanwhile, Brianna Callow was also cooking. The sophomore silenced the Muskie bats, allowing just one hit in the first three frames. The lone hit occurred in the third, when the hosts got a single and advanced to second on the throw. Muskingum advanced the runner to third with a sac bunt, but Callow stranded her there with a strikeout and a popout. Muskingum tallied a single in the fourth, but Callow got a couple popouts to keep the game scoreless.

The Blue Streaks broke Muskingum's bid at a perfect game in the fifth, as Maddie Traub poked a single up the middle just to the left of Muskie's diving shortstop with two outs. But Traub ran no further, as a lineout ended the frame. In the meantime, Callow continued to cruise in the fifth, with a quick 1-2-3 inning.

Thomas and Callow traded three-up, three-down frames in the sixth, and so the teams stood deadlocked at 0-0 entering the seventh. The Blue Streaks continued to make strong contact in the seventh, with three straight balls hit to the outfield, though all found gloves.

Muskingum found more luck in their half, with an opening single finding grass in left field. The Fighting Muskies got another runner aboard, as an errant throw on what would have been a sac bunt gave Muskingum two runners in scoring position with no outs. A pitch in the dirt to the hard-hitting Hawk allowed the winning run to come home on a passed ball.

And so, the Blue Streaks lost a 1-0 heartbreaker. The teams combined for just four hits in the second game, though most outs came from balls put in play, as the teams only had nine combined K's.

Callow accepted her first loss of the season, surrendering just three hits and one unearned runner in 6 innings. The McDonald, Ohio native (now 5-1) tabbed 4 strikeouts and just 1 walk in a stellar outing.

The Blue Streaks will get back to action on Tuesday at home, tentatively slated to face Otterbein, weather-permitting of course.
