Softball Fires Past Penn State Behrend in Non-Conference Finale

ERIE, Pa. – Thursday provided a brief respite from the April grind of Ohio Athletic Conference play for John Carroll Softball.

In the Blue Streaks' final scheduled non-conference games of the campaign, JCU snagged a sweep of Penn State Behrend.

In a Thursday road doubleheader, the Blue Streaks secured victories of 7-2 and 4-2 to advance to 16-14 on the campaign. The Blue & Gold finish with a 12-4 mark in non-conference action this season.

Game 1
John Carroll set the tone for what would be a strong offensive day in the first inning of the first game. Bella Carcioppolo kicked off the game with a single, and Alyssia Carmichael followed it up with a double. Kaylyn Odelli scored Carcioppolo and the team's first run with a sacrifice fly.

Danielle Orendi opened up the game strong, striking out the Lions in order in the first. In the third inning, the Blue Streaks tacked on a second run, as Kendall Trunzo doubled and scored quickly on a PSB error.

In the fifth, Penn State Behrend evened the score, finally getting to Orendi. Emily Graves kept the game square at 2-2, entering with 2 outs and a runner on second before getting a K for the third out.

The Blue Streaks broke the deadlock. Nina Scavelli reached on an error, dashed to third on a Serena Paterno single, and scored on a clutch Gabby Hougan RBI single to left. Graves mowed down three straight Lions in the sixth in response.

JCU's bats came up big in the seventh. Melissa Smith started the fun with a 1-out double to left. Scavelli toed the batter's box next and roped an RBI double to right. Paterno got aboard on an error, and then a passed ball plated Scavelli. Following a wild pitch and a Gabby Hougan walk, Elaina Rodriguez sent home Paterno on a single. Hougan scored the fourth and final run of the frame on a fielder's choice.

Brianna Callow entered in the seventh and quickly got the three final outs.

A total of 8 Blue Streaks registered a hit, with Carcioppolo and Trunzo each netting two hits.

Game 2
John Carroll again got the bats going early. Bella Carcioppolo jacked a double to left as the leadoff hitter and quickly dashed home on an Alyssia Carmichael single.

In the second inning, the Blue Streaks roared for three runs. Back-to-back singles by Serena Paterno and Gabby Hougan began the frame, and Elaina Rodriguez moved them forward with a sacrifice bunt. Paterno scored on an error that allowed Kendall Trunzo to reach base, and then Hougan got home on an RBI single by Carcioppolo. Trunzo completed the scoring, coming home thanks to a sac fly by Carmichael.

From there, the scoring slowed to standstill for JCU. It didn't matter, because of the Blue Streaks' stellar pitching staff.

After allowing a double to her first batter faced in the first, Brianna Callow hit a groove. The Lions got their first run thanks to a solo shot to start the fourth. But Callow got through the inning with no more damage.

Casey Cash checked into the game in the fifth and cruised in her first inning of work. The Lions managed to eke out a run in the sixth, but Cash stranded two runners. And in the seventh, she allowed two singles, but a flyout 9-5 doubleplay ended the game, 4-2 in favor of JCU.

Callow earned the win, advancing to 7-5 while dropping her ERA to 2.94. Cash collected her first career save.

The Blue Streaks will face Wilmington next for an OAC doubleheader.
