Eighth Inning Push Helps Blue Streaks to Senior Day Victory Over Wooster

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — The John Carroll Baseball team honored its seniors on Senior Day during their last home game at Schweickert Field by scoring two runs in the eighth inning to push to a 3-2 victory over Wooster.

This was the second time JCU had played the Fighting Scots this season, as they won 15-11 in just five innings at Wooster back on March 29.

Both teams had little scoring threats and held the other to zeros until the seventh inning.

Wooster struck first in the frame, as they scored on a Leo Widtmann RBI single to score Jack Whitehouse.

Senior Jared Orwell got the Blue Streaks' first run on the board in the home half of the inning on a Joe Olsavsky RBI single to right field. Orwell reached on a walk and stole second to get into scoring position.

In the eighth, the Fighting Scots scored again on a squeeze bunt from John Panstares to plate Riley McErlean and take a 2-1 lead. With Wooster threatening as there was another runner on third with two outs, Sylvan Wiley pitched a huge strikeout to keep the deficit at one.

JCU got it going right away in the bottom frame, as their first batter, Sean Connolly, started the inning off with a single. Then, Justin Hanley doubled to left center, and with Connolly on third, Jack Harmon cleared the bases with a two-RBI double to make it 3-2. The Blue Streaks could not muster anymore runs, as each of the next three batters got out.

With the lead secured going into the ninth, John Carroll knew they had to find defensive strength for the last inning.

The Fighting Scots did not go without a fight as they loaded the bases with just one out. Then, Samuel Basso relieved Wiley and got the next two batters out on a strikeout and line out to end the game.

The Blue Streaks tallied nine hits total, and Olsavsky, Connolly, and Harmon each had two. Starter Jamon Higley went six strong innings, allowing only three hits, no runs, one walk, and struck out four. Wiley earned the win and Basso had the save.

After the game, each of the seniors and fifth year players were honored with a special last trip around the bases while embracing with their teammates and coaches lined up around the infield dirt between the bags.

The team will travel to Oberlin on Wednesday, May 3 for a 4 p.m nonconference tuneup game before their ever-important series against Baldwin Wallace on Friday, May 5. JCU has to win one game against BW to make the OAC Tournament.
