Women's Lacrosse Loses a Heartbreaker to Capital in OAC Semifinal

BEXLEY, Ohio — The John Carroll Women's Lacrosse team's season came to a devastating end following an overtime loss to the Capital University Comets on Wednesday, May 3.

Traveling to Columbus, the Blue Streaks knew they had a tough opponent after playing the Comets earlier this season and losing by a score of 19-15.

The rematch in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinal was intense. John Carroll put up the fight of their lives as they were able to tie the home team 13-13 by the end of regulation to force overtime. But the Comets got the golden goal to advance.

The Blue and Gold got off to a fantastic start in the first half of the competition as they were able to control the lead 8-5 going into halftime.

Olivia Gerlach was the first Blue Streak to find the back of the net, as she scored within the first minute of play. Capital retaliated quickly, but Shannon Burdick wouldn't let that last long, as she added to the score.

Midway through the first quarter, Gerlach added another goal to the stat sheet, but once again the home team kept the scoring deficit in check with another goal of their own. Gerlach kept leading the offense with her third goal of the game at the end of the first quarter as John Carroll led 4-2 at the end of the first.

The scoring streak kept heating up in the second, as Lainey Donalson scored first in the second quarter, pushing the lead to three goals. Capital found twine, but just 40 seconds later, Kendall Gessner tallied a goal of her own, as the Blue and Gold did not back down.

The Comets were not going to go without a fight, scoring two quick goals with about six minutes left in the half, but the Blue and Gold finished out the second quarter with the momentum in their favor, as Gessner and Anna Spitzer contributed two tallies to the scoreboard to push the Blue Streaks' lead to three goals going into the locker room.

The third quarter was all Capital, as the Comets got six goals into the back of the net. The lone scorer for John Carroll in this quarter was Lauren Schwartz, as she tried to get that spark back for the Blue and Gold.

Going into the fourth quarter, the Blue Streaks found themselves trailing behind the home team for the first time all game, 11-9.

The Comets did not stop their tirade, as they scored the first two goals of the final quarter as hope started to dwindle for the Blue and Gold. Burdick would not let this go unnoticed, though, as she started what would be the spark for John Carroll.

Burdick, Mary Doherty and Gerlach each contributed to the offensive movement as John Carroll was able to make that final push with 30 seconds left, tying the game and sending the OAC Semifinal game into overtime.

With three minutes on the scoreboard, the two teams kept battling for the "Golden Goal" to win the game and advance on to the Championship game. With just under a minute left in overtime, the Comets found the back of the net, and the Blue Streaks' 2023 season came to a heartbreaking end.

Gerlach ended the game with a team high of four goals. Burdick added three goals and one assist as Gessner tallied two's in each of those categories. Doherty recorded six draw controls and Gerlach and Gessner totaled 10 ground balls, five each, to lead the team.

John Carroll ended the season with a 8-8 overall record, going 5-2 in conference play. The Blue Streaks will be back in action next spring as they look to replace the senior leadership and star members of the squad.
