Softball Splits with Wilmington in Season Finale at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The 2023 season has come to a close after two very busy months for John Carroll Softball.

The Blue Streaks concluded the campaign with a home split with Wilmington College on Sunday afternoon at Bracken Field, dropping the opener in eight innings, 2-1, before returning the favor in game two, 7-1.

With the split, the Blue Streaks finish the year at 17-17 in the first year of the Alex Lagesse era. The Blue Streaks cap off a season at the .500 mark for the first time since 2016, when John Carroll also went 17-17.

Game 1
John Carroll threatened in the opening two innings with base runners, but couldn't scrap anything across til the third. Two walks by Kendall Trunzo and Melissa Smith set up Nina Scavelli for success, as the Boardman native hit a perfectly placed bloop single to score Trunzo.

The Blue Streaks only enjoyed the lead briefly, as Wilmington clubbed a leadoff homer to knot the game at one. Wilmington threatened again in the fifth with two infield singles, but Danielle Orendi got out of it.

Scavelli stayed hot at the dish in the sixth, hitting a leadoff single. But Wilmington's pitcher got three straight outs to match Orendi's dominant efforts in the circle.

Wilmington hit a leadoff single to start the seventh, so Brianna Callow checked in to pitch and quickly garnered a lineout double play to get the runner 4-3. John Carroll also threatened but could not score.

And so, the game went to extras. In the eighth, Wilmington hit a double to left center with 1 out. Callow got one out, but Wilmington tabbed a single through the left side to get the go-ahead run across. John Carroll came up short in their half, so the Quakers took the opener.

Game 2
Emily Graves got the nod in game two. The Quakers got a couple runners aboard but Gabby Hougan stabbed a hard liner at second to end the inning.

In the third, the Blue Streaks got a run across. Kendall Trunzo singled and later scored on a Kaylyn Odelli single. Alyssia Carmichael appeared to score on a Melissa Smith sac fly, but when Odelli was tagged out on the play, the umpire made the call that the tag happened before the run crossed. And so, the score remained 1-0 JCU heading into the fourth.

Wilmington looked to get even, but Brianna Callow stranded two runners in her second inning of work. JCU got her some run support, as Gabby Hougan slotted a clutch double to score Mackenzie Stease. And then, Bella Carcioppolo whacked a double to left to score Hougan for another run. After a pitching change, Wilmington got out of the frame.

The Quakers got one run back in the fifth, but that would be it, as Callow got three straight swinging strikes to keep the lead intact.

The Blue Streaks added to their run total in the sixth. Marissa Barrali entered as a pinch hitter and clipped an RBI single, the first of her collegiate career, to score the inning's first run. After Carmichael loaded the bases with a single (Hougan got on via a HBP earlier in the inning, Odelli busted the game wide open. The Pittsburgh native blasted a deep 3-run double to left center for a 7-1 lead. Wilmington switched pitchers and got out of it, but the damage was done.

Casey Cash pitched the final inning of the season, a 1-2-3 inning on 6 pitches. Graves, Callow, and Cash combined to allow just 1 run on 8 hits while striking out 9 batters. Odelli led the charge at the dish, hitting 2-for-4 with 4 RBI. Carmichael also tabbed a multi-hit last game in her final time in the Blue & Gold before graduating a year early.

All in all, game two saw plenty of Blue Streaks contribute, a satisfying game to conclude the season.

Looking at the season as a whole, John Carroll played a lot of close ballgames. Nearly half of JCU's 17 losses were decided by one run, as the Blue Streaks dropped 8 games by a single run, including 5 conference games. The Blue Streaks also did not lose a game by double digits, and did not lost a run-rule game.

In other words, John Carroll played a lot of close games, and will hope to grab a few more of those close contests next season. No doubt, the future is bright in University Heights.
