Women's Soccer Keeps it Close Against Defending National Runner-up CWRU

CLEVELAND – The season opener did not allow for a warmup for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks confronted the reigning NCAA Division III national runners-up in Case Western Reserve University, on the road no less. But Michael Marich's squad held its own.

John Carroll dropped a narrow 2-1 defeat to Case Western Reserve in Cleveland on Friday evening.

The Spartans, coming off a 20-1-1 campaign in 2022, got just about all of the promising chances in the first half of the season opener.

CWRU tallied the first shot of the contest in the 5th minute, but Madeline Martin Koiser stopped that one, as she did in the 11th minute for her first two collegiate saves. The Spartans got back with another shot again in the 19th minute and again in the 20th.

The Spartans' buildup at last succeeded in the 32nd minute, with Maggie Farra finding twine low right off an assist from Andrea Silva for the first goal of the season.

CWRU kept up the pressure as the half continued on. But the Blue Streaks kept the Spartans to just one goal in the first half. The Spartans did outshoot the Blue Streaks in the half overall, 8-1, and held a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal.

After a Spartan chance early, Sara Gennuso threatened on a try, but it missed wide right. Less than a minute later in the 54th minute, the Spartans tallied an insurance marker. Helina VanBibber found the back of the net for a 2-0 goal.

The Spartans continued to apply pressure down the stretch of the second half. But the Blue Streaks did not surrender.

In the 82nd minute, the Spartans passed the ball back to the center. Gennuso came charging in from nearly 20 yards out, taking advantage of a shaky touch by a Spartan. Gennuso rocketed a right-footed shot off the hands of the keeper and into the right-side of the net. The hustle goal by the Fairview, PA native halved the lead.

While the Blue Streaks tried to even the score, the Spartans held on for the 2-1 victory.

The Spartans held wide margins in shots, 19-5, and shots on goal, 9-3. But the Blue Streaks put on a spirited effort against Case Western Reserve, one of the top programs in the country.

Next up for the Blue Streaks is a home matchup next week, as John Carroll will host Wittenberg on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 pm.
