Women's Soccer Accepts Second Straight Tie After Stout Battle with Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio – At the start of the season, tests of endurance can be good for a soccer team. Early-season challenges can prepare you for the grind of the postseason with quick turnarounds. Two games in 24 hours against two stout foes is the challenge the Blue Streaks confronted this weekend.

Following a 2-2 tie at Kenyon on Saturday afternoon, John Carroll Women's Soccer confronted Denison in Granville on Sunday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks tied the Big Red by a final score of 1-1.

The Big Red and the Blue Streaks, hailing from the North Coast Athletic Conference and Ohio Athletic Conference, respectively, do not have a ton of history. But not once in the previous 12 matches had JCU defeated Denison, as the Big Red entered with an 11-0-1 series advantage. The last meeting occurred in 2016, a 2-2 tie after two overtimes in Granville.

The teams experienced a quiet start, not surprising after both teams played just yesterday. Denison earned three corner kicks and JCU tallied two, but neither team managed a shot on goal.

Overall, the Blue Streaks did lead in shots, 6-3. Only a total of three fouls were called in the opening 45 minutes.

At the start of the second half, the Blue Streaks pressured the Big Red, prodding at Denison's defenses. After a few shots, the Blue & Gold broke through in the 55th minute.

A corner kick by Meredith Coloian from the far side of the field began the action. Denison headed the ball away from danger outside of the box to the nearside. But then Kathryn Shaffer settled the ball and connected with a nearby Emily Patrzyk. The sophomore spun to her left and quickly left-footed a low shot towards the net. The beautiful ball tricked the goalie five-hole, and John Carroll snatched the 1-0 lead.

As expected, the Big Red looked to provide a response. The Big Red tested the JCU defenses, hoping to break through. John Carroll managed to thwart the next few responses, but eventually, Denison forced a JCU mistake.

In the 75th minute, Denison got a promising offensive opportunity, and JCU's keeper dashed out to stop the chance. The move was too aggressive, as a foul was called, granting Denison a penalty kick. The Big Red took advantage of the chance, knotting the contest at 1-1.

The game continued with a quick tempo down the stretch, with both teams eager to break the deadlock. Each team tallied a shot on goal in the 78th minute, not long after Head Coach Michael Marich brought in fresh legs, as Coloian tabbed JCU's shots after checking back into the match.

Madeline Martin Koiser stood tall in the late goings, as the Big Red sought out holes in the JCU defensive effort. For JCU, Madyson Rosado got a late chance but it went wide left. Denison possessed the ball in the final minute and frantically looked for the game-winner, but JCU stayed cool and collected.

JCU finished ahead in shots narrowly, 14-12, but shots on goal were perfectly even at 5-5. The intensity physically picked up late, with nine fouls (5-4 JCU) called in the second stanza.

Koiser earned 4 saves in the victory. Patrzyk peppered Denison with a team-high 5 shots. A total of 19 players for John Carroll got playing time.

The Blue Streaks are now 47-50-6 against NCAC sides all-time.

Following the road swing through central Ohio, the Blue Streaks will have a few days off from competition. Next up on the schedule is another NCAC non-conference road bout, this time against Oberlin, on Saturday, September 16.
