Men's Soccer Duels Case Western Reserve to a Home Tie

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Men's Soccer team faced a tight and enduring match against Case Western Reserve University Wednesday night.

JCU reappeared at the Don Shula Stadium for the second time this week, coming off of an outstanding 4-1 win against The College of Wooster. The Blue Streaks fought a big bout against the Spartans as they battled to end in a 0-0 score.

Wednesday's match up was immediately heightened, as both teams entered the game undefeated so far in the season. The two teams maintained a 4-0 record and both ranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, with John Carroll clocking in at #5 and Case Western Reserve checking at #22.

The Blue Streak - Spartan match up has been a battle for the past few years. The last two times the teams had faced off ended in a 2-2 tied game, only to continue the streak as they ended the match scoreless.

It was a rowdy and aggressive first half, as both teams were caught battling for possession of the ball for the first minutes for the start of the game.

The Blue Streaks had the first chance to snag the lead as they were granted a cornerkick, only to be head-butted out by CWRU defense at the seven-minute mark.

It was an intense and equal playing field, until the Spartans began to dominate in their offense. The fast-paced Case Western Reserve challenged John Carroll, as they admitted seven shots and overall possession on offense.

However, the Blue Streaks' defense was in control on the field. John Carroll held the game tight defensively and was quick to knock out any attempted shots by Case.

At the 25-minute mark, the strong JCU midfield set up a shot attempt for Logan Penton. The high-speed Case Western Reserve defense hustled to stop Penton, and instantly knocked away the shot. Right after that, JCU had another chance to score the first goal of the game by a cornerkick from Izac Coleman. Coleman's kick soared deeply across the field and could not find the back of the net.

The first half continued to be filled with high energy and big aggression. At 35:20, Case Western Reserve was given a cornerkick, but could not make it past the standout sophomore goalie, Brendan Moher.

A speedy Jack Foht was close to grabbing JCU the lead after having an open field to score until the Spartan defense caught up to the senior to deny the shot yet again. Penton attempted to score off of a free kick as well, but could not look through to Case's net.

With five minutes left in the first, Nicholas Ruggerio had the last chance to snag the lead for JCU, only to be saved by the Spartans' goalie, Bradley Winter. Both teams left the field after the first half scoreless.

As the second half began, John Carroll was quick to capture the offensive possession. Jaden Wright started the fresh half with a close shot on goal that was saved again by Winter.

Minutes were counting down and the two teams were neck and neck. John Carroll and CWRU looked for multiple ways to put themselves on the scoreboard, but the equally talented teams put up a fight.

The Blue Streaks started to have more opportunities on offense, as they remained to keep their control during the middle of the second. The number of shots increased for JCU as they found the rhythm of their offense.

At 64:05, Coleman reached for a goal from a cornerkick but was shut down once again by Spartan defense.

During the 85th minute, Penton viewed an open lane to the net and had a high right kick to put JCU in the lead. Winter was unstoppable in the goal as he miraculously saved Penton's shot.

As the second half was winding down, both teams did not stop being aggressive. Neither team could grasp a goal, leading the match to end 0-0.

Penton led the action for the Blue Streaks with four shots, followed by Patrick Koenig with two shots on goal. Shots were perfectly even at 10-10, but JCU enjoyed a lopsided advantage on shots on goal, 7-1. Moher made JCU's lone save.

The Blue Streaks are back in action on Saturday, September 16 at 7 p.m. against Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio.
