Women's Soccer Fires Past OWU on Senior Day in Non-Conference Finale

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – It was an exciting Senior Night for the John Carroll Women's Soccer, as the Blue Streaks secured another home win for the season.

The Blue Streaks returned home to Don Shula Stadium on Tuesday night to face the Ohio Wesleyan Battling Bishops. The Blue & Gold also had the chance to celebrate the fantastic five seniors on the squad: Taylor Wohleber, Gabriella Walter, Erin Schneider, Abby Mortellaro, and Sarah Mortellaro.

The Blue Streaks more than held their own, as they captured a 1-0 win over OWU.

John Carroll advances to 4-1-3 on the season, and an impeccable 4-0 mark at Shula Stadium, as the non-conference slate concludes.

The first half was an overall neck and neck battle on the field. John Carroll claimed the first shot on goal with a shot in the first five minutes and established some offensive dominance.

OWU's Halle Dacek attempted the first shot of the game for the Battling Bishops at the nine minute mark. JCU remained calm and collected on defense, shutting out early shots from Ohio Wesleyan.

Due to an injury, the Blue Streaks were forced to experiment with a different defensive lineup. The team's standout goalie, Madeleine Martin Koiser, coined multiple saves in goal as the Battling Bishops put up some hefty shot attempts. Substitutions came into play throughout the half for JCU, looking to mix up the line up and seek any chance of scoring the Blue Streaks could take.

John Carroll gained the offensive momentum towards the end of the half, as Madyson Rosado charged a shot against the OWU defense, yet couldn't get past the busy penalty box.

The Battling Bishops were granted a corner kick after time passed on the field, seeking to snag the first goal. OWU's corner shot was a close one in goal, as it hit the top of the post. The Blue Streak defense reacted quickly to the kick and immediately knocked the ball out of the goal area just in time.

During the 34th minute, the Blue Streak's energy changed for the better. Off an Alli Malinky touch, Abby Walker quickly found a gap on the field after the Blue & Gold's corner kick, finding Sara Gennuso for a wide open shot. Gennuso perfectly executed a left foot kick to the bottom corner of the net, granting the first goal of the game to JCU.

The Battling Bishops continued to fight back and tested Blue Streak defense, but the first half ended in John Carroll's favor 1-0.

The beginning of the second half was once again a level playing field. Both teams amped up their intensity and were seen becoming more aggressive towards one another.

Four minutes into the fresh half and the Blue Streaks grew their offensive control. Malinky spotted Emily Patrzyk charging towards the goal, giving her a clean crossover pass. Patrzyk was close to scoring JCU's second goal of the game until OWU's goalie rescued the shot.

Patryzk found another chance for a goal when the Twinsburg native forced the ball right to the middle of the net. The Battling Bishops' goalie once again saved a one on one shot in the box.

In the 80th minute, OWU constructed a clear path to put themselves in the lead. OWU's Jazlyn Brooker received the ball and was inches away from the net to tie up the score, only to be misplaced and narrowly missed the net.

The Battling Bishops began to apply their strength on offense and found a rhythm for themselves. Seven minutes were left in the second half and OWU had one last corner kick to tie the Streaks. Koiser was a wall in goal, as she had a diving save for the Blue Streaks' defense.

As time was counting down in the match, both teams maintained the good fight and the Battling Bishops could not find the back of the net. The Blue Streaks locked in another win for the record, finishing the match 1-0.

Patrzyk tallied four shots for the Streaks. Sara Gennuso notched two shots, followed by Alli Malinky and Kathryn Shaffer with one. Shots were narrowly in OWU's favor, 14-12, as Koiser made three saves. No cards were issued.

John Carroll is set to return back to Don Shula Stadium to face Wilmington College on Saturday, September 30 at 7 pm. as part of Homecoming Weekend. Every match from here on out in the regular season will be against Ohio Athletic Conference foes.
