Blue Streaks Roll Past Quakers in Homecoming Conquest

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Entering today's game with a 55-18 record in Homecoming matchups, John Carroll Football notched its seventh consecutive Homecoming victory with a dominant win over the Wilmington Quakers, 59-7.

The Blue Streaks rolled into the matchup after picking up two huge Ohio Athletic Conference wins over Baldwin Wallace and Heidelberg. Just as they did last year, the Blue Streaks scored 59 points in a great team win over Wilmington.

With the victory, the #14/17 Blue Streaks have piled on three straight September conference wins.

"It's the first Homecoming I've ever been to since I was a student here. It's just great," said Head Coach Jeff Behrman '95. "Obviously you're more concerned about the game and not everything that's going on, but I'm sure everybody had a great time. It's always good to have a weekend like this, as you get to see people you haven't seen in a long time. I thought it was great for the university.

"Our guys did what they were supposed to do on the field today. I'm really proud of our guys. I'm proud of their preparation throughout the week, which really makes a difference in terms of how you get yourself ready for a game. I'm really proud of how they prepared and how they got themselves ready. And then they came out here and executed the plan in all three phases."

Both teams came out of the gates slow offensively, but John Carroll seemed to get going with a 14-yard reception by Joe Torok and an 8-yard rush by Evan Mcvay. The drive stalled after a holding penalty, and a third down conversion pass attempt was incomplete, forcing them to punt. Starting off on their own 10-yard line, the Quaker offense had some success with two catches by Saa'lih Muhammad for 16 yards. However a huge hit by Chris Gholston resulted in a third-down tackle for a loss to jumpstart this Blue Streak defense.

The Blue Streak offense took full advantage, as they scored with a quick 3-play drive.  A huge 40-yard play action pass reception would set up an 8-yard Matthew Buser touchdown. And so, the Blue Streaks led 7-0 halfway into the quarter.

The Quakers put together a few positive plays including a huge 3rd and 14 conversion from Derek Larimer, but the Blue Streak defense held strong thanks to a third down sack by Tyler Thimons, which forced a punt.

The Blue Streaks showed promise with a couple more third-down conversions on offense with receptions from William Burney and Dorian Facen Jr. JCU stood ahead after the opening quarter, 7-0.

Starting the second quarter on the 28-yard line, the John Carroll offense faced a 4th and 3 situation. The Blue Streaks converted with a 4-yard Joey Totok reception. Buser then gained ten yards with two carries, setting up a 14-yard touchdown off of a receiver screen for Torok. With 13 minutes remaining in the half, John Carroll led 14-0.

The Blue Streak defense didn't see the field for long, as Elijah Chungu intercepted a pass near the sideline, getting the offense right back onto the field. Two plays later, Dorian Facen Jr. hauled in a 37-yard touchdown reception, the first of his career, to push the lead to 21.

Down by 21 and in desperate need of a big play, the Quakers made something happen, forcing a JCU fumble and turnover. John Carroll responded instantly, forcing a three and out. The offense capitalized with an 8-play drive, which included a huge 32-yard reception from Tyler Mintz. This set up a Buser 2-yard touchdown run. With four minutes to go, the Blue Streaks led, 28-0.

Wilmington was unable to get going, as they punted after a short 4-play drive. John Carroll fired up another score, as a 26-yard Facen toe-tap reception set up the Blue Streaks deep in Wilmington territory. Mason Sullivan finished it out with an 11-yard touchdown run. John Carroll stood far ahead, 35-0, entering the halftime break.

"I definitely thought I was out. I had to just stare at the ref, until he made the signal," said Facen. "It means a lot to win at Homecoming. We worked hard all week and the score showed what we prepared well."

The Blue Streak defense remained dominant in the second half. John Carroll wasted no time, as Luke Mazowiecki recovered a fumble on the first play of the half. Just two plays later, Mason Sullivan powered into the end zone on a 10-yard score.

The Wilmington offense did finally find a bright spot. Larimer found Mohammed for a 63-yard reception, which would set up a 1-yard touchdown reception for Ashton Grffith, slimming the John Carroll lead to 42-7. The remainder of the quarter saw two more successful drives from the Blue Streaks. Javi Quimba ran in a 10-yard touchdown and Yanni Volas punched in a field goal from 24 yards out. Going into the fourth, John Carroll led, 52-7.

John Carroll stayed in complete control of the fourth quarter with multiple big plays. An interception from Griffin Lidyard got the defense rolling, and Tyson Simon also tabbed an interception for the defense.

Will Burney scored the last touchdown of the game, with an 8-yard touchdown catch from Nikko Georgiou, the first career TD for both plays.

The game ended with the Blue Streaks winning in clear fashion, 59-7.

The Blue Streak offense did some serious damage with a well rounded performance. Joe Collins threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns with a 76.5 completion percentage. Dorian Facen led the receivers in yards with 84 on only 3 receptions and a touchdown. On the ground, Quincy Newsome, Matthew Buser and Matthew Sullivan combined for 208 yards and five touchdowns.

"Obviously I'm glad to be back taking a fifth year, I'm glad I could contribute to the team's win. It's a great day to be a Blue Streak, and a great win," said Buser. "Our offensive line is super deep. Those are my guys, those are my best friends. They work their butts off and it's good to give them some love and some glory as well. Also, credit to the guys who go in there and block, guys like JP Germano, Dorian, and the whole case of receivers who block well. You get no glory for blocking out on the outside."

On defnese, the Blue Streaks limited Wilmington to 232 yards. Garrett Sparks topped the team with 8 tackles. Tyler Thimons did well with 7 tackles, a sack, and a tackle for loss. Jahiem Peake also racked up 6 tackles, while Chris Golson played a great role with 3 tackles and 0.5 TFL.

"We just wanted to keep everything in front of us, which we did for the most part" said Golson. "Homecoming was great today. We want to get the campus community involved, which we do more and more each year I've been here. It's great to have everyone supporting the Blue Streaks and everyone loving what you do.

"We all put in a lot of work and it's great to see it pay off in front of the crowd. I'd also like to credit Tyson, as he had that nice catch, he's been chomping at the bit to get on the field as much as he can. For him to go out there and prove what he can do I felt really good for him. Go Streaks!"

With this win, John Carroll improves to 3-1 and now 3-0 in conference play. The Blue Streaks will prepare this week for another game in conference play, as they'll travel next Saturday to Don Drumm Stadium as they'll face off against the Marietta Pioneers.
