No Luck Needed for Blue Streaks' Shamrock Game Win over Capital

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Football team extended its win streak to three after a huge victory over the Capital Comets, 49-14.

Led by sophomore running back Quincy Newsom four rushing touchdowns, the Blue Streaks were able to accumulate 345 rushing yards against the Comets en route to the win in the first annual Shamrock Game.

"He earned the starting role," said Head Coach Jeff Berhman '95 when asked about Newsom. "With the practice weeks he's put together and the games he's put together, he earned that starting nod and he took full advantage of it."

Newsom's incredible four-touchdown performance made him the first John Carroll player to score four touchdowns in a game since Josh DeLozier on Oct 27, 2018 against Wilmington. The Twinsburgb native finished with 12 rushes for 111 yards while becoming just the ninth JCU running back to find the end zone four times.

JCU wasted no time in taking an early lead, as offensive weapon Evan McVay gave the Blue Streaks perfect field position with a 53-yard return on the opening kickoff. Six plays later, running back Quincy Newsom found the endzone on a three-yard run to give John Carroll an early 7-0 lead.

After JCU's defense forced a quick three-and-out, McVay began the ensuing drive with a massive 53-yard run to put the offense in the red zone. Quarterback Nick Semptimphelter was able to complete a few passes to set McVay up for a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Before the end of the first quarter, the Blue Streaks' offense was able to extend the lead to 21, thanks to a Newsom picking up his second touchdown on a ten-yard run. Both the offense and defense carried the success into the second quarter, as Newsom was able to find a hole and score his third touchdown in a span of 18 minutes.

Semptimphelter picked up his first passing touchdown in the closing minutes of the half, finding wideout Dorian Facen Jr for 12 yards to give the Blue Streak an impressive 35-0 lead.

While the offense managed to tally 345 total yards in the first half, John Carroll's defense held Capital to a total of 44 yards on 25 plays during the first two quarters. Tyler Thimons and Tony Tirado led the charge on defense, racking up a combined eight total tackles and two tackles for losses.

Thimons and Tirado would finish with a combined 10 total tackles, while junior Mason Rus helped out the defensive efforts with 1.5 sacks.

The Blue Streaks' offense did not take their foot off the breaks, as Newsom would kick off the second half with yet another touchdown to give the Blue Streaks a 42-0 lead.

Capital made a switch at the quarterback position to start the second half, bringing in sophomore Donovan Duncan. He helped the Comets put together a strong drive, until Jacob Hufnagel ended the efforts with his first interception of the season. Despite being down, Capital would not go down without a fight. The defense forced two straight turnovers and converted on drives to make it 42-14 late in the third quarter.

Running back Nemo Jenkins would quickly respond with a touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter to end the Comets' momentum.

"I think as the season goes on, we want to continue to get stronger and better, and I think the guys took another step towards that goal today," said Behrman after the huge victory. "We felt it was really important for us to own the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball and to control the space on the field with our speed, and I believe that showed."
