Wenzler’s Warriors Stay Hot, Defeating Heidelberg in OAC Play

John Carroll continues strong OAC efforts with fourth straight conference win

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- On a beautiful Wednesday night under the lights of Don Shula Stadium, the Blue Streaks continued their efforts in the win column, as they defeated Heidelberg 7-0.

Before the game started, the John Carroll Men's Soccer team honored the late Chris Wenzler '90. The former longtime JCU Sports Information Director was honored on the field, and the pink captaincy band worn by Izac Coleman was replaced by a black band with white text with Chris's initials "CW".

The Blue Streaks' first true opportunity came off of a corner in the 11th minute. Lining up to take it was Hayden Haffner, who sent a cross into the box. Touching a handful of players in the box, it found the foot of Jack Foht who passed it to fellow senior Andrew Ruggerio. Ruggerio put a shot which found the back of the net to give it a 1-0 lead for the Blue Streaks.

At this point, John Carroll kept firing at all cylinders. Patrick Koenig was the one who truly lit the fire in the offense. He had a pair of shots, but Miller was able to step up and make a pair of key saves on the senior striker.

Koenig kept firing and he got some contact in the box, and the referee deemed a handball. As the one who drew the foul, Koenig would be the one to take the shot.

Going slow to the circle, he took a shot that was saved by Ryan Miller, but Koenig got his own rebound and put in the back of the net to make it a 2-0 lead.

Just a minute later, the Blue Streaks got another opportunity on Miller. First year Louis Roseberry marched down the field and sent a cross to Koenig. Koenig controlled the ball and buried it into the top of the net to make the lead 3-0, and finding his second goal of the match.

At halftime, the Blue Streaks continued to dominate the stat sheet. John Carroll outshot the Student Princes 14-3 and 10-1 with shots on goal. The Blue Streaks also had 7 corners in the first half compared to Heidelberg's zero.

Coming back, the Blue Streaks were eager to get back into motion in the second half. With Guilherme Wanderley going to the center dot, the Blue Streaks kicked the ball and the second half was underway.

Just like the end to their second half, the Blue Streaks continued their scoring efforts. Just 78 seconds into the second half, first year player Milo Hignett found the back of the net to extend the lead to 4-0. The goal came courtesy of back to back passes from Connor Carruth and Yehonatan Sabag, who both were credited with the assist.

Minutes later, the Blue Streaks found the back of the net once again. Jack Foht snuck a goal through the Heidelberg defense to extend the lead to 5-0. First year Louis Roseberry was credited with the assist.

Twenty seconds back into the action, Patrick Koenig got a quick turnover. Just one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Koenig fired a shot into the back of the net to notch the hatrick and secure a 6-0 lead.

"It feels great to find the back of the net, as well as the whole team, honestly," Koenig commented. "We have been struggling in the goals column this year, but to come out and score 7 feels good. It definitely brought some good energy for the team, and hopefully we build on it in future games."

The Blue Streaks kept firing despite the lead. Sebag was able to read the back line and slip through on a wide open net. Sebag passed the ball into the net for a 7-0 lead.

After the seventh goal, the Blue Streaks eased off of the gas pedal, and became victorious with the 7-0 win. The Blue Streaks outshot Heidelberg 23-8 and 15-3 with shots on goal.

The Streaks improve to 11-3-2 and 5-1 in OAC play. The Blue Streaks hope to continue their win streak as they travel to Wilmington College to face the Quakers at 7 pm on Saturday, October 26.
