Women's Soccer Keeps on Trucking in OAC Play, Beating the Berg

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The shutout streak continues for John Carroll Women's Soccer.

The Blue Streaks registered the team's fifth straight shutout, all against Ohio Athletic Conference foes.

The string of shutouts marks the longest for the program since 2013, when John Carroll notched seven in a row to conclude conference play. The five straight shutouts is tied for the second longest run for the Blue Streaks (2008 and 2011).

From the start, John Carroll tested the Student Princes' star goalie, Brigid Enright, an OAC Athlete of the Week earlier this season. Enright leads the league in both goals against average and save percentage. In the third minute, Emma West put the first shot of the game on net.

Smith tested Berg in the 15th minute, but the hosts were equal to the task. Soon thereafter, the Blue Streaks' prodding paid off.

In the 26th minute, Lucy Kuerbis fired it forward across midfield to Madyson Rosado. The senior struck it ahead to Abby Smith up the right side. As Smith charged forward up the flank, the Heidelberg defender was slow getting to her. Smith took advantage of the space and centered it to Rosado, and the veteran one-touched it over the goalie's head to break the deadlock.

Not satisfied with the single goal, John Carroll kept up the pressure and Meredith Coloian tallied a shot on goal in the 32nd minute. The remainder of the opening half was quiet.

Syd Hewer, the defending OAC Offensive Athlete of the Week, missed on a couple shots early in the second half and then sent one in on Madeline Martin in the 59th minute.

Heidelberg controlled much of the action at the start of the second half. The Student Princes dominated the chances, outshooting the Blue Streaks, 10-1. Martin made 4 saves to preserve the shutout.

Interestingly enough, Heidelberg did not have a shot on goal in the first half and JCU did not manage a shot on goal in the second stanza.

Taylor Kuhn, Gianna Merlo, Jennifer Crowley, and Alli Malinky all played 90 minutes to help keep the Student Princes off the board.

Next Up
John Carroll will have significant challenges upcoming, facing the teams ranked second through fourth in the conference standings to finish the year. Wilmington begins the gauntlet on Saturday for a 2 pm match as JCU commemorates its Morgan's Message match.
