In Full 60-Minute Effort, Football Dominates Quakers in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The focus lately for John Carroll Football has been playing a full, 60-minute game.

Safe to say the Blue Streaks played one today.

John Carroll dominated from start to finish in a 66-14 victory at Wilmington College on a nice fall afternoon.

The stats tell the story. A whopping 625 yards of offense, ninth most in a single game in program history. Zero turnovers and zero sacks on offense, all while forcing five turnovers on defense. Just three penalties.

You can't ask for much more in an Ohio Athletic Conference victory, especially when it's your fifth straight.

Tyren Montgomery started the scoring with a 28-yard rushing touchdown on an end-around at the 5:50 mark of the first quarter. Grant Myers and Matt Wrather provided great blocks on the play. While Wilmington responded quickly with a score, JCU got back on the board just 17 seconds later. Dorian Facen Jr hauled in a screen pass from Nick Semptimphelter, and thanks to blocks by Wrather, Troy Mrukowski, Tyler Mintz, and others, Facen dashed 61 yards for the go-ahead score. JCU never relinquished the lead.

Facen found paydirt once more early in the second quarter. The sophomore ran a nice fade route for a 19-yard score. Two plays after Tony Tirado and Tyler Thimons stopped Wilmington at its own 30-yard line on 4th and 1, Quincy Newsom dashed to the promised lane. The sophomore used a bruising block from a pulling Mrukowski plus a downfield block by Mason Bala for a 23-yard scoring scamper.

After a Josh Jones interception, JCU's offensive line continued to dominate. Wrather and Dehmer pushed forward and Luke Gibbons helped seal the edge on a 19-yard touchdown run by Evan McVay.

Wilmington did find paydirt in response, but the Blue Streaks got another touchdown before the break, too. Thanks to a nice Semptimphelter playaction fake, Montgomery got single coverage deep, and the veteran QB found his target deep for a 30-yard score. JCU enjoyed a 42-14 lead at the break.

Coming out of half, McVay dashed into the end zone on a Wildcat run on the opening drive. Mike Bartusiak and Jon Tomcufcik leveled good blocks for McVay's 11-yard TD. JCU kept rolling on its next drive, as Montgomery found himself wide open up the middle for a 33-yard scoring strike.

The grad transfer kept on rolling after Dylan Crasi picked off a pass to give the ball right back to the offense. Montgomery took advantage of soft coverage, catching a short pass at the 20-yard line, evading the corner, and dashing the rest of the way untouched.

Colin Schuler added a 22-yard field goal with 5:49 to play in the fourth quarter to finish out the scoring.

Nick Semptimphelter became the 10th JCU QB in program history to pass for five touchdowns in a game. Tyren Montgomery became the 15th Blue Streak to score four touchdowns in a game. Schuler became the seventh JCU kicker to convert nine extra points in a game.

First year running back Josh Styles led the team in rushing with 102 yards on 14 carries. Evan McVay notched two rushing touchdowns for the third time in his career. Facen found the end zone twice for the first time in his career. Semptimphelter's 388 passing yards are the most in a game by a JCU signalcaller in a decade, when Mark Myers passed for 392 yards vs. Heidelberg on September 30, 2014.

Jacob Hufnagel led all Streaks with 5 tackles, adding an interception and three pass breakups. Michael Beiersdorf notched his first career interception, as did Josh Jones.
