Men's Soccer Kicks Off OAC Play with Win at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The process wasn't pretty, but John Carroll Men's Soccer got the job done at Muskingum University.

In the first contest of the Ohio Athletic Conference slate, the Blue Streaks snuck by the Fighting Muskies with a win.

John Carroll secured a 1-0 decision over Muskingum, advancing to 7-2-2 on the season.

From the opening whistle, John Carroll was on the hunt for a goal. Nicholas Graeca notched the game's first shot on goal in just the second minute. Hayden Haffner then took a turn, firing a pair of shots on net. JCU's first substitutions occurred in the 20th minute, and a Nathan Monastra shot on net followed shortly after.

The 34th minute saw a lot of action, including a Yehonatan Sabag chance. The 38th minute also experienced plenty of excitement with a couple of shots off target plus a cornerkick. Andrew Ruggiero got a shot on goal later in the half, but nothing went in.

The shot totals were far in favor of John Carroll at 13-1 overall and 6-0 on net. Muskingum played more physically with 7 fouls to JCU's four.

In the early goings of the half, John Carroll took the offensive, with both Luka Pranjeta and Dylan Halm sending shots wide. In the 49th minute, the Blue Streaks at last broke through.

Things started with a Brenden Moher free kick ahead. The Blue Streaks secured the ball and moved it forward to Halm. The freshman then brought the ball towards the net, faked the goalie to draw him in, and slotted a short pass to Pranjeta. The Willoughby native finished it off with a diving shot to at last break the tie.

John Carroll continued to hunt for insurance goals. Ruggiero headed a shot on net in the 55th minute. JCU substituted liberally, hoping to use fresh legs to break down an attacking Muskingum side.

The 74th-76th minutes saw a flurry of activity. Four shots and two cornerkicks happened in the fracas, defined by a Sabag shot off the post that nearly provided breathing room.

Despite John Carroll's continued attempts, Muskingum thwarted each opportunity. The Fighting Muskies did not give up, even pressing at times throughout the match.

JCU finished with clear advantages in shots, 25-3; shots on goal, 9-2; and corner kicks, 8-0.
