Men's Basketball Suffers Second Straight Loss, Dropping to #8 Emory

JCU lost both teams of the Great Lakes Invitational

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- On Day 2 of the Great Lakes Invitational, John Carroll was matched up against the #8 Emory University Eagles.

The game, which was controlled entirely by the Eagles, resulted in the Blue Streaks suffering their second straight 15 point loss.

Tonight's game started eerily similar to last night's affair, with Emory coming out and starting 4-of-6 from deep in just the first four minutes of play. Despite the Eagles' great shooting, Luke Frazier was coming up big for the Streaks, scoring the team's first seven points, including an early three. His early work set the score at 14-7 in favor of Emory just four minutes into the game.

Scores from Henry Raynor and David Gentry got John Carroll to within three, but not for long, as Emory began to take over. The Eagles continued to light it up, finding the open man on every one of their possessions. Their ability to knock down the three ball with consistency helped them on a 16-3 run that blew the game open.

The Blue Streaks continued to battle but couldn't get back within single digits for the remainder of the half. John Carroll went into the break down by 12 with plenty to talk about.

The story of the first half was each team's shooting percentages. Emory was shooting 48% from the field as well as 39% from deep, while John Carroll was shooting just 34% from the field while being 2-of-5 from deep.

Emory started the new half exactly where they left off, hitting a three on their first possession. Two layups and another three later would find John Carroll staring at a 20-point deficit.

But as we've learned, this Blue Streak squad is never truly out of a game until the final buzzer sounds. Chase Toppin and Luke Frazier responded with a 9-0 run bringing life back to the Blue and Gold.

The Eagles answered the run with an alley-oop play that was finished with an empathetic dunk to get their side going again. A Will Yontek and-one got the Streaks to within 10 with just over twelve minutes to play.

Coming out of a timeout, Emory went on a quick 8-0 run to get their lead back to 18. From there, the teams traded makes and misses with John Carroll getting no closer than 12. Emory was eventually able to dribble out the clock and walk away with the 90-75 victory.

The Blue Streaks were led by 19 point efforts from both Luke Frazier and Will Yontek. Chase Toppin and David Gentry added 12 each.
