Women's Soccer Conquers Capital in OAC Tournament Semifinal at Home

The Blue Streaks advance to the OAC Championship for a second straight season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The Blue Streaks provided an impressive bounceback performance on Thursday night in University Heights to take care of the Capital Comets by a score of 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Tournament Semifinal.

In the 10th postseason meeting between John Carroll and Capital in women's soccer, it marked the first time the two squads met in University Heights for OAC Tournament play. After receiving a bye in the quarterfinal, the #2 seed Blue Streaks were ready to take on the #3 Capital. JCU entered on a two-game winless streak.

Meredith Coloian played the hero, scoring the game-winning goal late in the match.

The Blue Streaks came out swinging, with Madyson Rosado creating offense in the first two minutes with a cross, and two shots that missed the net wide. In the 10th minute, Emma West threw a shot on net that was saved by Capital keeper, Liv Alford.

After a shot over the net by Capital's Bella Leonetti in the 15th minute, John Carroll got a series of great opportunities. Abby Smith fired a fantastic cross after streaking down the sideline, which found the foot of Meredith Coloian, and was fired off the post in the 18th minute. Coloain's chance was followed by a phenomenal pass by Rosado to Abby Smith, who missed a breakaway opportunity just wide of the net with the keeper coming out to challenge.

Capital got maybe their best chance of the first half when Taylor Marcum got her foot on a corner kick that was tipped safely over the net by Madeline Martin. Following Capital's chance the Blue Streaks went right back to work on offense, with a shot by Abby Smith in the 34th minute that was tugged just left of the net. Rosado continued her productive half two minutes later with a shot right on net that was corralled by Alford.

Capital finally regained some offensive momentum in the 39th minute, when Bella Leonetti took a corner kick that was dangerously bouncing around in the air before being pushed to the side by Martin. The following corner was back-heeled by Ryanne Michel but scooped up by Martin. A minute later, Grace Estes fired a shot on net that was nicely saved by Martin once again.

After a competitive first half with momentum swings in each direction, the score was knotted at zero.

To open the second half, Abby Smith fired in a looping cross that was reeled in by Alford in the 47th minute. The first fantastic opportunity of the second half came in the 50th minute when Avery Hart appeared to miss a wide open net after catching Martin out of position on a dangerous cross into the box.

In the 51st minute, Jennifer Crowley stepped up into the Capital end of the field after a ball leaked out of the action around the net, and fired one on net from distance that was saved by Alford. Following a break in opportunities, chances began to pick up again late in the second half with shots on net from both Kathryn Shaffer and Meredith Coloian.

With possession and shots continuing to go back and forth, John Carroll began to dominate with a final push in the closing minutes of the second half. A shot just wide by Coloian was followed up by shots from both Smith and Taylor Kuhn. Shortly after, Coloian capped her active second half with a goal after the ball was rattled around following a blocked shot by Rosado.

"We knew at this time of the game, we just needed one," Coloian commented. "My teammates gave me a great opportunity and I am thankful enough to score and get ready to play a great game on Saturday."

John Carroll faced a few scares in the closing minutes of the match with a desperate Capital team looking to save their season, but it proved to be too little too late, and the Blue Streaks prevailed by a score of 1-0.
