Men's Basketball Gets Back in the Win Column, Staving off Marietta

Luke Frazier helped lead the Blue Streaks in a bigtime home victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- Adversity has hit John Carroll Men's Basketball this season, but the Blue Streaks are fighting back.

In a game between Ohio Athletic Conference titans, the Blue Streaks upended Marietta in a 78-74 battle.

The Blue Streaks ended a 4-game schneid and evened out at .500 for the season with the team's first conference win of the campaign.

Heading into the first media timeout, the Blue Streaks had the lead in a defensive battle 10-7. Half of the Blue Streaks' points came from Brandon Rose, the other half coming from Luke Frazier.

Both teams continued going back and forth with each other. Senior Henry Raynor was able to get an offensive rebound, and put it in the basket for two. In response, the Pioneers got an and-one opportunity courtesy of Landry Palata.

The back-and-forth action continued to flood in. Luke Frazier hit a three with ten minutes left in the first half, and Marietta then scored on the fast break, as Frank Waganfeald made a strong hook shot. At the second media timeout, John Carroll continued to hold the lead. Frazier pulled up from two, making the lead double digits.

The Blue Streaks continued to push on the offensive front. Omar Abuhamdeh grabbed an offensive rebound, and on a no-look shot, he threw the ball over his head for an impressive two points. The surge kept coming. Junior Kasey Hunt caused a turnover and found Frazier in the corner, hitting his second three of the match.

With 20 minutes down, the Blue Streak led, 46-32. Luke Frazier led the team in points with 19 points in 17 minutes and went 3-of-5 from behind the arc.

The Blue Streaks' advantage stretched further to 17 points with an Aidan Fitzgerald triple early in the second half. However, this would be the high-water mark for the JCU lead.

The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit with a combination of strong play in the paint, ample triples, and some strong defensive stops. At the midpoint of the half, 9:58 to be exact, the Pioneers pushed to within one possession thanks to a Jack Main 3-pointer.

Hunt helped to provide JCU's response. The Tiffin transfer hit two free throws, and then converted an and-one to get the lead back to two possessions, 64-60. Following a pair of David Gentry free throws, the teams traded triples, and then Raynor hit a layup. JCU called a timeout with 4:32 on the clock, ahead 71-63.

The Pios scratched and clawed back closer, narrowing the deficit to five points with 1:49 left. Coming out of a timeout, JCU committed a turnover, but a Frazier chasedown block prevented Marietta from taking advantage. A couple Fitzgerald free throws provided a dagger, upping the lead to seven points with 36 seconds left.

The Blue Streaks were able to stay on top, defeating Marietta, 78-74, getting the first conference win of the season. Frazier led the team in points with 27 points, followed by Hunt with 15. Hunt shot 67 percent from the field, including 50 percent from downtown. Hunt's 15 points was a career high as part of a breakout game for the junior.

"It was really special to get a win in this situation," Hunt commented. "I am just really proud of the team and the way we came together. It was extremely tough down the stretch and it was awesome we were able to close it out with a win."
