Aiden Ashburn notched a perfect 4-0 record for JCU

SANDUSKY, Ohio – All done with studying, the John Carroll Men's Wrestling team headed west to the Cedar Point Sports Center for the Berg Holiday Duals.

The Blue Streaks competed in four dual matches, winning three of them.

While a narrow defeat to Adrian began the day, the Blue Streaks did not lose again, besting Waynesburg, Trine, and Penn State Behrend.

Nearly every match was closely contested, as there was just one pin and one tech fall in this showdown. Adrian got out to a 6-0 start, and then built a 15-4 lead, with Diego Stropko getting the lone early win. But decisions by Daniel Devera and Aiden Ashburn spurred on JCU. Jesse Kanatzar notched a big 17-1 tech fall at 197, but it was not enough to overcome the Bulldogs. JCU lost on criteria.

Domination defined this contest. Ty Daugherty (133), Vananthony Trunzo (141), and Kyle Bizjak (149) all notched tech fall victories to get the Blue Streaks going. After a Ryan Forrest decision at 157, Frank Gallo (165) and Ashburn picked up back to back pins. Kanatzar and Jacob Holtz (285) finished things off with first-period pins.

A hot start propelled the Blue Streaks to the victory over the Thunder. Alex Crane kicked things off with a tech fall, with Daughery following it up with a late pin. Stropko picked up another victory, this time via decision, and Bizjak added another tally to the win column, coming via 18-1 tech fall. And so, JCU held a commanding 19-0 lead. While Trine battled back with a pir of pines, JCU finished strong. Ashburn and Wills Bronson notched back-to-back pins, and then Kanatzar and Thomas Lunt picked up back-to-back major decisions for the dominant victory.

Brett Stanley and Daugherty each added 6 points to the JCU column to start off the match, with Stanley getting a forfeit and Daugherty tallying a first-period pin. The Lions threatened to make things interesting, sandwiching a Bizjak decision with tech falls to narrow the gap to 15-10. But then JCU rolled. Sam Partain started the party with a 17-1 tech fall. Ashburn, Bronson, and Lunt all notched wins (Bronson and Ashburn via pin) to set things out of reach.
