JCU Baseball Drops Two at Allegheny to Start the Spring

MEADVILLE, PA – Baseball is officially back.

John Carroll Baseball traveled to Allegheny College on Sunday for a doubleheader to start off the season. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Beckley, West Virginia but was moved to Meadville due to the cold conditions.

The Blue Streaks dropped two on the road, 5-2 and 4-2.

The story of a cold day in Pennsylvania was solid pitching and some missed chances at the dish.

Game 1
The campaign opened on a fortuitous note. If you believe in superstition, the first time at the plate for John Carroll provided a positive omen. The Blue Streaks tallied two in the top of the first inning.

Michael Pollard drew a hit by pitch, Sean Connolly walked, and Bryce Holt was hit by a pitch to quickly load the bases with no outs. Connor Mayle promptly singled down the left field line to score both Pollard and Connolly. Unfortunately, the fun could not continue, as Allegheny got three straight outs to escape the jam.

Graduate student Maxwell Schumaker got the starting nod for the Blue Streaks and performed very well. The Troy, Michigan native gave the visitors four very good innings, surrendering a lone run in the fourth.

The Blue Streaks tried to get the veteran run support but stranded runners. John Carroll left two aboard in both the second and the third innings. Jack Harmon got to third in the fifth via an error and a wild pitch but couldn't get home.

Meanwhile, Christian Bedolla took the bump in the fifth and did well before handing things off to Frank Freeman for the sixth. After a clean Freeman inning, the Gators came alive and plated four runs in the sixth inning, aided by errors. Logan LaMere cut down a Gator stealing to end the bleeding, but the hosts led, 5-2.

A leadoff Harmon double in the eighth provided promise of a JCU comeback. But three straight fly outs left him stranded and the ninth finished one-two-three.

The Blue Streaks left 10 runners stranded, but did tab five hits and three walks.

Game 2
In a similar start to the opener, the backend of the twinbill featured results from the Blue Streaks' bats.

Holt slotted a single in the first, but the real action spawned in the second inning. Harmon hit another leadoff double, Jack Beiter drew a walk, and Erik Daugenti got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Logan LaMere hit a sacrifice fly to score Harmon. But a strikeout and a flyout sandwiched a hit by pitch, therefore leaving the bases juiced.

The third inning featured more hard hits for the visitors. Holt and Mayle clubbed back-to-back doubles to add a second run to JCU's column. Unfortunately, the Gators authored a quick response, crossing four runs in the bottom of the frame to take control.

Austin Miller departed after four innings and four strikeouts, yielding to Jamon Higley. Playing just 30 minutes from his hometown (Union City, PA), the senior pitched four spotless innings of relief. The lefty allowed only two hits in his four frames.

John Carroll tried to get back on the board in the sixth, with hits by Harmon and Daugenti. But two foulouts left the bases loaded. JCU got two more aboard in the seventh to no avail. And in the ninth, the Blue Streaks threatened.

Sean Fritinger pinch hit to start and slotted a single. Holt soon walked to bring the go-ahead to the dish. But to Allegheny's credit, the Gators garnered two flyouts to conclude the day.

Harmon and Holt each finished the day 3-of-8. Mayle drove in three of JCU's eight runs.
