Blue Streaks Survive Mary Washington Comeback in Series Finale

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Saturday's story was early leads lost by late blowups. Sunday's tale nearly ended the same way.

In the final matchup of a 3-game series at the University of Mary Washington, John Carroll Baseball scored enough runs to insulate from a scary, late Eagles comeback attempt on St. Patrick's Day.

Roger Simon took the mound for JCU in the bottom of the ninth with a slender 10-9 lead, the bases juiced, and two outs. Simon settled the nerves of anxious JCU fans with a swinging strikeout to save the day.

Following three games at Dickinson Stadium, JCU returns from its annual trip down south to Virginia with a 5-9 mark.

Game 3
For the first time in the series, the Blue Streak bats got going in the first inning. John Carroll quickly loaded the bases, as Sean Connolly and Bryce Holt got aboard with hit by pitches and Michael Persichetti legged out an infield single. Two passed balls plus a Logan LaMere RBI single allowed the visitors to plate three in the opening frame.

Austin Miller got the nod on the bump and allowed a pair of runs, but JCU's bats continued to work. Back-to-back walks by LaMere and Matt Armstrong got the fourth started. On a Michael Pollard single, the UMW third baseman was called for obstruction, allowing LaMere to score. Connolly then put two runners in scoring position on a sacrifice, and Persichetti sent both home with a 2-run single. Following a Bryce Holt double, Jack Harmon plated Persichetti on a sac fly to complete a 4-run inning.

Persichetti did more damage in the fifth with an RBI single, but the Eagles stuck within striking distance with scores in the fourth and fifth, so JCU held an 8-4 lead entering the sixth.

RBI singles by Connolly and Persichetti supplemented the JCU lead in the eighth, which was crucial. Because the Eagles did big damage in the bottom of the stanza, scoring five runs. Mary Washington nearly got the tying run, too, but JCU threw out UMW's Ty Lowe 9-3-2 as the Eagle senior tried to stretch a triple into an inside-the-park homer.

After a quiet top of the ninth, JCU allowed a one-out single and then walked a runner after getting a groundout. So, the Eagles had both the tying and winning runs aboard. A walk then loaded the bases, so Manager Bobby Bell went to the bullpen for Roger Simon. The sophomore right-hander from Loyola Academy didn't disappoint, getting a swinging strike on a 2-2 count to end the ballgame.

Persichetti steered the offense with a 4-for-5 day with 4 RBIs. One spot below him in the order, Holt finished with a pair of hits and an RBI. John Gavric will credited with the win, his career fourth, since he was the most effective reliever by pitching 3.1 innings. Simon got his first save of the year and fourth overall.
