Wooster's Big 6th Inning Spells Defeat for JCU Baseball

WOOSTER – In a future conference preview, John Carroll Baseball took a short trip south to the College of Wooster on Wednesday.

While the Fighting Scots did not get a hit in the first four innings, the hosts made up for it soon after, as a 9-run Wooster sixth inning doomed John Carroll.

The Blue Streaks lost a 12-6 ballgame that lasted three hours and 31 minutes on a chilly, windy afternoon.

To start the contest, John Carroll got runners aboard via an error and an Erik Daugenti single. But after Wooster got out of trouble, it was the hosts who hung up a crooked number in the first frame.

The Blue Streaks threatened in both the second and third, getting a runner in scoring position in both stanzas. Logan LaMere doubled in the second, and then both Daugenti and Sean Fritinger tabbed singles in the third. But JCU left all the men stranded.

In the bottom of the third, John Gavric gave way to Matt Campbell, which marked the season debut for the St. Edward grad. Campbell soon gave way to Owen Gerba, a Saint Ignatius grad, who ensured Wooster didn't add an insurance run. Gerba pitched quite well for the third straight game.

Thomas Bates continued his hot streak in the next half-inning, as the freshman tied it up by hitting a soft grounder up the middle that found a hole on his first pitch. Bates' 1-run single tallied his third RBI in just his fourth collegiate at-bat. Not long after an Eric Krowl Texas leaguer single, JCU scored one more in the fifth inning to take a 3-2 lead.

That advantage was short-lived, as Wooster plated a pair in response in the fifth, and then roared for nine runs in the sixth to take control.

A Bryce Holt RBI groundout, a 2-run Bates double, and a Wooster wild pitch helped JCU score four in the eighth inning. But it was not close to enough, though Jaxson Gruber did pitch two and a third scoreless innings.

John Carroll did outhit Wooster, 14-9. Bates (4-for-5) and Erik Daugenti (3-for-5) both thrived at the dish, though JCU left 14 runners stranded. For JCU's pitchers, free passes were again the problem, as the visitors walked 14 and hit two batters.
