Women's Tennis Gets in the Win Column, Defeating Gordon College

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – John Carroll Women's Tennis is in the win column.

The Blue Streaks nabbed the first victory of the year during its second contest of the spring trip to Hilton Head.

Walt Oden's squad defeated the Gordon College Scots on Tuesday, 8-1.

The John Carroll tandems worked well together in doubles play.

Madeline Kavenagh and Sarah Sgambati fired up an 8-4 win, Felicity Kolb and Evelyn Deren worked hard, 8-5, and Kayley Gimbel and Caroline Chandler cruised, 8-3. That provided a 3-0 cushion for the Blue Streaks.

JCU's crew enjoyed ample success in singles. Kavenagh steamrolled at No. 1 (6-1, 6-2), Kolb dominated at No. 4 (6-0, 6-0), and Chandler cruised at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0).

While Sgambati dropped a narrow 5-7, 3-6 loss, her teammates picked her up with close wins. Namely, Deren won a thriller at No. 3. The Northville, Michigan native opened with a 6-3 conquest before dropping the second set, 4-6. But the tiebreaker set was pure dominance, 10-0. Gimbel also garnered a nice 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5.

All in all, it was a nice win for JCU. But no rest awaits tomorrow, as a quick turnaround awaits. The Blue Streaks will take on Mercyhurst University at 9 am on Wednesday.
