#21 Redlands Proves Too Much for Softball in California Closer

REDLANDS, Calif. – The West Coast trip concluded for John Carroll Softball on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks finished off the California journey with two games at University of Redlands, playing on the Softball "Field of Dreams." The beautiful field was designed by the same architect who worked on the classic film, "Field of Dreams."

Unfortunately, the field was not heaven for the Blue Streaks, as a strong Bulldogs squad handed John Carroll a pair of six-inning losses, 8-0 and 9-1.

Following the losses to #21 Redlands, JCU will return home with a 1-6 record.

Game 1
Redlands got off to a good start in the first hitting, plating a run with back-to-back-to-back singles. JCU got its first baserunners in the third with a hit by pitch and Emily Graves single. But the Streaks left both stranded.

The Bulldogs made JCU pay in the third, scoring three runs to extend the lead further. Danielle Orendi entered with one on and no outs, and quickly stopped the bleeding, but the hole was dug.

Gabby Hougan and Isa Crespo singled in the fourth, but nothing came of it. All was quiet then until the sixth. Redlands scored three runs in the frame to end the game by an 8-0 final.

Game 2
John Carroll opened up strong at the plate with singles by Kendall Trunzo and Melissa Smith. But Redlands escaped unharmed. The same situation elapsed in the second, as Lexie Genovese and Laney Karpowicz were stranded after tabbing a single and a hit by pitch.

The Bulldogs experienced no issues in taking advantage of baserunners in their half of the second. The hosts roared for five runs to take full control, through four of the runs were unearned due to a pair of JCU errors.

After Trunzo was stranded after a single in the third, the Blue Streaks ended a lengthy scoreless streak in the fourth. Isa Crespo opened things up with a double, and she'd score soon after courtesy of back-to-back singles by Emily Graves and Kaylyn Odelli.

Redlands responded with more offense, adding two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, before ending things with one final run in the sixth.

Trunzo finished with a 2-for-3 day at the dish. JCU stranded seven runners, hinting that more runs are on the way down the road for JCU. Kristin Dems accepted the loss.

Up Next
After playing strong competition in California, John Carroll Softball will return home to continue non-conference play. JCU will host Waynesburg University on Saturday, March 16 at Bracken Field.
