Men's Lacrosse Curbs Capital During 10-Year Celebration Game

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The Blue Streaks hosted the Capital Comets at the Don Shula Stadium on Saturday, celebrating 10 years of John Carroll Men's Lacrosse.

It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon as the Blue Streaks secured yet another win at home.

The Blue Streaks notched a fifth win in a row against the Comets, with a final score of 8-3.

John Carroll's offense started things off as Josh Lombardo snagged the first goal of the game within the first two minutes of the first quarter.

Lombardo's goal set up the Blue Streaks for a quick offensive lead, as Braden Zarek, Billy Paladino, and Colin Morrissey all contributed to the scoreboard by the end of the first quarter. JCU finished the first 15 minutes of the game in the lead, 4-1.

The Comets gained defensive momentum as they held JCU from scoring. Capital's Mason Spaulding scored only the second goal for the Comets in the first five minutes of the second quarter. Capital began to dominate with possessions, as they fired past JCU's offense, yet the Blue Streaks hustled on defense to stop any offensive comeback hopes Capital had.

The Comets forced many turnovers from the Blue Streaks throughout the last ten minutes of the first half. Both teams began to fight on an even playing field, as neither team could find the back of the net with the second quarter wrapping up.

The two teams entered the locker room during halftime with John Carroll only up by two, 4-2.

After JCU celebrated the All-Decade Team, the Blue and Gold came out firing in the third quarter. Colin Morrissey secured a goal for JCU at the seven-minute mark, sparking the Blue Streak offense once again.

Braden Zarek put John Carroll in a comfortable lead following Morrissey's goal. JCU's lead in the third quarter consisted of a 6-2 score. Just when the Blue Streaks were trailing away offensively, the Comets responded and scored with three minutes left, shortening John Carroll's lead to three.

Sophomore Sean Keane entered the game and brought intensity for the Streaks. The Buffalo native pushed past Capital's defense to score with one minute remaining in the third, expanding the lead 7-3.

The fourth quarter reflected upon the second, as both teams held their own on both sides. It was yet again a scoreless quarter until Josh Lombardo found an open Billy Paladino, scoring one last goal for the Streaks.

Jon Gaglio held it down on defense as he recorded ten saves and only allowed three goals, despite the pressure the Comets put on JCU.

John Carroll notched a 8-3 win over the Comets, adding another win to their record. The Blue Streaks are now 5-1 in the conference and 6-4 overall.

Paladino, Lombardo, and Zarek each notched three points to steer the offense. Jon Gaglio made 10 saves in net in another nice effort. Gaglio and Alexander Sykas each notched 5 groundballs. Sykas, Camden Uchic, and Max Cook all tallied 2 caused turnovers.

John Carroll seeks another upcoming win against Heidelberg University on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 pm, right back in University Heights.
