Blue Streaks Settle for Split with Purple Raiders as Bats Erupt in Game 2

ALLIANCE – The bats were quiet in the opener, but Mount Union couldn't keep the Blue Streaks quiet forever.

John Carroll Baseball erupted for 14 runs in the second game, salvaging a split with a 14-8 win to close the day after a disappointing 6-1 loss in the opener.

The Blue Streaks ended a short 3-game slide, now sitting at 5-7 in Ohio Athletic Conference play on the season.

Game 1
Mount Union fired up the scoring with a little home cooking in the first inning. A 2-run single got the hosts on the board first. While Zachary Breeden excelled on the mound, the Purple Raiders' bats provided more insurance. A 2-run double and an RBI single in the fourth inning extended Mount Union's lead to five. Mount Union provided one more run in the sixth.

After going in order in the second, third, and fourth, the Blue Streaks threatened in the fifth. Bryce Holt and Michael Persichetti singled, but were both stranded.

The Blue Streaks did make some noise in the ninth after leaving a pair aboard in the eighth. Jack Harmon opened the inning with a single and came around to score on a Sean Connolly double down the left field line. Unfortunately the rally could not produce more runs to extend the game.

Game 2
The second game of the twinbill featured a mirror start to the first, as the Purple Raiders stormed to a 4-0 lead after two frames. But the Blue Streaks dug deep and roared for a gigantic response.

George Haracz started things with a single and a stolen base. After a Sean Connolly single, Michael Persichetti notched a marvelous bunt to score Haracz and send Connolly to third. Erik Daugenti notched an RBI single and Connor Mayle tabbed a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position for Bryce Holt. The veteran did not disappoint, tying things up with a 2-run double.

JCU did not stop there. A Luke Chlystek RBI single gave way to Haracz batting around, and the Evanston, Illinois native clubbed a 2-run double to complete a 7-run inning for the visitors.

While Mount Union did get one back in the next half-inning, JCU fired back with a Holt RBI single. The bats didn't stop there, putting three more on the board in the sixth, courtesy of an Erik Daugenti RBI double and a Jack Harmon RBI single plus some nice baserunning by Holt. One more got across in the seventh with a Connolly RBI single.

While the Raiders crossed a couple in the seventh, the Blue Streaks stayed in the driver's seat with more offense in the next half-inning. Chlystek clipped a 2-run double to up the lead to 14-8.

After Maxwell Schumaker started and went five innings, Henry Darrow provided two innings of solid relief and Brandon Ferdinando finished things out with a pair of scoreless frames.

Connolly, Harmon, and Chlystek all finished with 3-hit games, while Daugenti did the most damage with a 4-for-6 day with 2 RBIs, his fourth career game with 4 hits. Holt and Chlystek tied for the lead with 3 RBIs.
