Bats Roar to Deliver a Fun Senior Day Victory over Marietta for JCU Softball

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – While the weather was chilly at Bracken Field, warm feelings of Senior Day couldn't be spoiled by a little cold.

Hosting Marietta College, John Carroll Softball dropped the opener in a 5-inning affair, 14-3, before bouncing back in a huge way in the second game. The Blue Streaks walked it off with a 10-2 conquest in 6 innings to pick up an Ohio Athletic Conference victory.

It was a wonderful ending to a day celebrating Gabby Hougan, Danielle Orendi, and Serena Paterno.

Game 1
While the Pioneers struck out in order to start the game with Danielle Orendi cooking, the visitors could not be held off the board for long.

Marietta clubbed a grand slam to get rolling and the bats didn't look back. Another homer in the third inning upped the lead, while an unearned run also crossed in the fourth.

Gabby Hougan broke up the shutout with a marvelous double in the fourth frame. The Springboro native found a gap in deep left center, scoring Kaylyn Odelli and Melissa Smith after each got aboard with singles.

More runs followed in the fifth, ensuring a 5-inning victory for the visitors.

Game 2
While the Pios scored first again in the second game – plating a pair in the second – the Blue Streaks authored a big time response this time.

Melissa Smith, Gabby Hougan, and Lexi Genovese all singled to bring the veteran Serena Paterno to the plate with one out in the second inning.

The Kentucky native did not disappoint.

The senior blasted a 2-2 offering for a grand slam over the wall in left field. The dugout erupted with joy as Paterno accepted the homer hat from fellow senior Danielle Orendi. JCU didn't end things there, loading the bases again, leading to a pitching change. Smith singled down the left field line to up the lead to 5-2, but the Pios managed to escape there.

With Kristin Dems continuing to roll, thanks in part to a lineout to Genovese that turned into a double play in the fourth, the Blue Streaks continued to pile on insurance runs.

Kaylyn Odelli smashed a double down the left field line with one out in the fourth to up the lead to four. But the real fun happened in the sixth frame.

Kendall Trunzo got the party rolling with a double to center. Elaina Rodriguez slotted a single to score the junior. Odelli got aboard to put a pair of runners on for Smith, and the catcher didn't disappoint. The sophomore smashed a double to plate Rodriguez and set up two runners in scoring position. Marietta made a pitching change, but it didn't matter.

Two batters later, Isa Crespo clipped a single over the right fielder's head to score both runners, and send the fans home happy with a 10-2 run rule win.

Dems got her second win of the season in the circle, with six solid innings. Smith steered the offense with a 3-for-4 outing with 2 RBIs. Paterno's grand slam marked her collegiate first, and the 4 RBIs tied a single-game high for the Exercise Science major.
