Blue Streaks Thunder Past Oberlin in Dominant Home Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – The John Carroll Baseball team scored 25 runs on 19 hits in a historical offensive win against Oberlin College, 25-11.

The Blue Streaks' offense got off to a hot start in the first inning, totalling nine runs off eight hits. From there, the Blue Streaks were off and running in the team's third straight win.

The 25 runs by John Carroll marked the program's best offensive output since a 25-3 victory over Finlandia on March 6, 2015.

Senior Bryce Holt knocked in two with a double to get JCU on the board, while junior Jack Harmon's single drove Holt in to make it 3-0. A fielding error and a little bit of small ball by Luke Chlystek continued the onslaught, and back-to-back singles from Thomas Bates and Michael Pollard paved the way for a 6-0 lead with bases loaded for Holt's second plate appearance. Once again, the Richfield native tacked on two more runs off a single.

The offensive explosion was capped off by a Connor Mayle dashing home, making it 9-0 after one inning of play.

Oberlin manufactured their first two runs of the contest in the third inning, thanks to a pinch-hit home run from Zachary Ritts and a sacrifice fly from David Curtin.

However, this was quickly masked by another massive inning for the Blue Streaks. Both Bates and Pollard touched home yet again after Michael Persichetti hit a double down the right field line. With ducks on the pond, Eric Daugenti grounded out to score Persichetti, while Harmon picked up his second RBI of the day off a sacrifice fly.

Before the end of the inning, Holt managed to score off a wild pitch, making it 14-2 after three innings.

The Yeomen refused to go down without a fight, as they were able to push across five runs in response to make it 14-7. But this deficit would only grow within the next three innings of play.

In the fourth, Ryan Funderburg tallied a single that pushed across Jack Beiter to make it 15-7. Harmon added his third RBI of the night in the fifth inning with another sacrifice fly. Jackson Birt joined the party with a single of his own, driving in two more runs. Finally, Mayle nailed a triple to round out the fifth inning with two more runs, making it 21-7.

Persichetti and Mayle would strike one more time in the sixth inning, after getting hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Daugenti, clearly not satisfied with his one-RBI performance, nailed the coffin close with a two-run single.

Oberlin's lone run in the sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh were not enough to put the Yeomen back in the driver's seat.

Mayle (3-for-4, 4 RBIs), Holt (3-for-3, 3 RBIs), Daugenti (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), and Harmon (1-for-4, 3 RBIs) directed the offense from the No. 2-5 spots in the order.

On the mound, Samuel Basso got credit with the win after providing three solid innings to open the game on a bullpen day for JCU.

John Carroll is set to host the Heidelberg Student Princes tomorrow in an OAC doubleheader at 1 and 4 pm at Schweickert Field.
