Baseball Sweeps Hiram in Great Day at Schweickert Field

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Over the course of the season, John Carroll Baseball has enjoyed some nice victories, but stringing them together has been an issue at times.

On Wednesday, the Blue Streaks put together a strong pair of games, notching the team's first sweep since April 10.

John Carroll rolled for two nice wins at Schweickert Field, beating the Hiram Terriers in a pair of 7-inning games, 13-3 and 5-3.

Game 1
The visitors got on the board first, getting a crooked number on the scoreboard in the second. While Kiayuan Baskerville looked strong overall in his first career start, a pair of singles, a wild pitch, and a passed ball on a strikeout allowed an unearned run to cross.

Meanwhile, Hiram's Jacob Kocuba enjoyed a strong start on the mound, retiring the hosts in order in the first two frames. But in the third, George Haracz singled up the middle and Luke Chlystek doubled down the right field line. With two on and two outs, Erik Daugenti got a nice piece and sliced a double in a similar spot to Chlystek. The senior's 16th double not only grabbed the lead, but also moved him to ninth for doubles in a season in program history.

John Carroll extended the lead in the fourth with a 2-out rally. Jack Harmon and Chris Bach tabbed back-to-back singles, setting the table for Haracz. The Loyola Academy grad tripled to plate both runners to up the lead to 4-1.

While Hiram trimmed the lead with a 2-run homer in the following half-inning, John Carroll provided a nice response in the fifth. A nice 2-run Connor Mayle single to center, a Harmon RBI groundout, and a Bach RBI single hurt the Hiram bullpen and the visitors' hopes of staying in the game. Jordan Suvak belted a ball to deep center field that hindered Hiram further, putting two more runs on the board and leading to another call to the 'pen. Entering the sixth, JCU stood in full command with a 10-3 lead.

Hiram didn't go without a fight, though, and loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Owen Gerba checked into the game and got out of the jam, garnering a shallow flyout to right field and then an L5 doubleplay.

JCU provided more insurance in the seventh with a Bach RBI walk and a Haracz 2-run single to put it out of reach.

Baskerville got his first collegiate win in a nice reward for a strong outing. Gerba closed things out well.

Game 2
While Hiram hit a homer to start the second contest, the Blue Streaks responded, as Jack Harmon clubbed a 2-run single up the middle in the bottom of the frame. Hiram tied it up quickly with a sacrifice fly in the second.

Daugenti walked to kick off the third frame, and quickly got home on a fantastic Connor Mayle triple, which was hit down the line and rolled nearly to the wall.

Hiram tied the game again in the fifth, but again the Blue Streaks wouldn't stand for that.

Daugenti and Persichetti got aboard with singles to set the stage for Harmon to come up in the clutch again. The Evergreen Park, Illinois native clubbed a big-time 2-run single to score both and get the hosts back on top. Harmon's hit ended up being the game-winner.

After Jay Rinehart provided four and one-thirds innings of strong work, Roger Simon roared the rest of the way. The sophomore from Loyola Academy did not allow a run and walked away with his first win of the campaign. Harmon's 4 RBIs are a single-game career best for the junior.
