Blue Streaks Best Future NCAC Foe Kenyon, Fall in 5 Sets to Greenville

SANDUSKY, Ohio – The depth of John Carroll Volleyball is already beginning to show.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a solid second day of the Great Lakes Cross Over Tournament, beating Kenyon College after dropping to Greenville University.

JCU advances to 3-1 after the team's second trip to the Cedar Point Sports Center. JCU lost to Greenville in five sets (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19, 10-15) and swept the Owls (25-17, 26-24, 25-15).

John Carroll vs. Greenville

While the Blue Streaks opened up the match well, the Panthers fought back to tie it up after being down by a few. And a 7-point run for Greenville proved to be costly for JCU, as despite kills by Jessica Liddle and Marissa Lynch late, the Panthers never doubted it in a 25-20 opening win.

The second stanza began the same as the first, with an even split to start, 11-11. Greenville then threatened to take control again with a nice rally, but after a JCU timeout down 18-13, the Women of Carroll came alive. Spurred on by a few Greenville errors and some clutch Natalie Glowe kills, the Blue & Gold roared for an 8-2 run to force a Greenville timeout. Two late kills by Lynch and JCU finished off the set, 25-22.

For another time, the teams fought to an 11-11 draw. Yet again, the Panthers started to get ahead, moving to a 17-13 lead. After a John Carroll timeout, deficit shrunk a bit for JCU, but this time, the Panthers held off JCU down the stretch, 25-22.

John Carroll managed to stave off an early exit with a victory in the fourth set. JCU fired out to a strong start and never looked back. A 5-0 run in the mid stages of the set helped, as did some Greenville errors. Despite a late comeback effort by the Panthers, an Abby Bednar ace closed the door and forced a tiebreaker set, 25-19.

The Panthers dominated the fifth set from the start, rolling to a 9-2 lead. JCU could not claw close enough to make Greenville nervous, falling 15-10.

Lynch and Glowe each starred with 13 kills. Liddle played strong defensively with a team-high 6 blocks. Tess Humphrey led the way with 19 assists. Glowe added 10 digs, followed by GG Beuselinck with nine.

"They were a good team with some very good hitters," said Head Coach Michele Benoit. "With this being our first weekend of competition, we're finding our mojo as a team. We're finding a rhythm between our setters and hitters. It was great to see the fight, as we could've easily lost in 3-4 sets. We were doing the right things."

John Carroll vs. Kenyon

The Blue Streaks got the job done in three sets against future NCAC rival Kenyon College. However, the match was still well contested.

"It was a great opportunity for everyone to see the court and contribute," said Benoit. "Kenyon is a solid team, they are still in a learning phase early in the year. We saw great things from Olivia at libero and GG performed well at the spot, too."

John Carroll didn't storm away with the opening set, but seemed to be in control. Things didn't get out of hand until late, as a 4-0 JCU run to move ahead, 22-14. JCU finished things off as both front lines experienced some errors.

A 6-1 start looked to set a similar tone for JCU, but the Owls howled for a 7-point run to stun the Streaks. The lead stretched further to five before JCU began the process of chipping away, tying it up at 20. Hailey Williams flashed her dynamic offensive skills to help JCU late, with a Mary Kate Sheehan kill and a Kenyon error grabbing the final two points for the set.

JCU's offense caught fire in the final set. A 10-2 JCU jaunt to move ahead 18-10 sent the message that the Blue & Gold didn't want to extend the match. Excellent kills down the stretch by a variety of players provided a clear victory.

"The cool thing is that each player on the team has the ability to step on the court and play at any time from 1-15," said Benoit. "The defense and ball control improved over our matches. We blocked well all weekend. Tess had a great weekend, showing a lot of maturity for the weekend. Our middle hitters Kenda, Jessi, and Deja all played well, as did Kallan. Natalie led the way yesterday. Across the board, everyone is doing what they're supposed to be doing."
