Volleyball Picks Up Pair of Wins in Hard-Fought Contests

GRANVILLE, Ohio – It wasn't an easy road, but John Carroll Volleyball returns home with a couple wins.

The Blue Streaks gritted out two victories on Saturday afternoon in Livingston Gymnasium on the campus of Denison University.

Both matches were hard-fought affairs, as JCU narrowled bested the host Big Red – 25-22, 14-25, 27-25, 26-28, 15-13. JCU then fired past Rose-Hulman – 26-24, 19-25, 25-12, 25-23. John Carroll did all this despite missing two starters.

A significant highlight of the day was grad transfer Abby Bednar surpassing 1,000 career kills.

JCU vs. Denison
The opening set saw a close start, until the Big Red opened a lead with a 6-point run. But the hosts could not break away with it. A 4-1 JCU run even stole the lead back briefly at 20-19. JCU then weathered a 3-point run before dominating the stretch run. Abby Bednar and Natalie Glowe each contributed a pair of kills and Olivia Mogyordy tabbed an ace as part of a 5-0 run to steal the set.

The Big Red dominated the second set just about from the get-go. It was an impressive offense that did the trick for Denison in a clear victory. But it was John Carroll that rebounded with its scrappy defense in the third set. The teams traded jabs after standing deadlocked at 19-19. JCU looked poised to make it a laugher late with a 4-point run, but Denison rebounded with three points. It was a nailbiter down the stretch, as a pair of Denison errors and a Bednar kill helped JCU squeak by with a 27-25 win.

A balanced offensive effort by JCU and early errors set things up well for JCU in set four, 11-5. But the Big Red found their groove in the midpart of the set, snagging the lead with a 5-0 run. Hailey Williams buoyed the JCU effort in the late stages, helping JCU remain within a point or two. The Big Red sent it to set point, 24-23, before JCU clawed back and got within a point of victory at 26-25. But a 3-point jaunt by Denison knotted the contest up at two sets apiece.

And so for the second time this season, JCU headed to that fifth set. As to be expected, the two teams dueled to the very end in a set decided by the minimum. JCU proved to be the clutch squad, winning three straight to clinch it. A Williams kill and a pair of blocks delivered the thrilling win.

Bednar led the way with 16 kills, while Glowe trailed closely with 15. Kallan Hrics stepped up with 10. Kendra Dziubinski impressed with 7 blocks. Haley Nicholson topped the team with 29 assists. Mogyordy nabbed 20 digs, while Williams also did well with 18 and Glowe chipped in 14.

JCU vs. Rose-Hulman
In a continuing theme, the first set was decided by the minimum two points. Despite several short runs, the Blue Streaks could not take control. The Fightin' Engineers nearly snatched the first set, that is, until an attack error plus kills by Bednar and Dziubinski to sneak away with it.

Rose-Hulman swarmed in the second set, hurling plenty at JCU. The Engineers tabbed a trio of 4-point runs, plus a late 5-1 stretch to even things up. John Carroll's response was authoritative, as Michele Benoit's squad put together one of its best sets of the weekend. JCU roared for a 7-point ripper with Williams at the service line. Rose-Hulman never recovered from that opening punch.

Staggered but not out of it, the Engineers got off the mat and even threw significant jabs. Rose-Hulman's best stretch ran up a 16-12 lead, but JCU withstood the storm. Errors aided JCU down the way, but it was strong play all-around that secured the victory in the fourth set. Williams provided the match-sealing kill.

Indeed, it was a career day for the Twinsburg native. Williams registered a career-best 12 kills and 18 digs. Bednar thrived as usual with 16 kills. Dziubinski deserves plenty of kudos with 10 kills. Tess Humphrey edged out Nicholson in assists (22 to 21). Mogyordy pitched in 14 digs.
