Spartans Slide By Men's Soccer in Short Roadtrip

CLEVELAND – Sometimes, soccer is a funny game.

While John Carroll Men's Soccer played quite well and appeared to have the upperhand, the final score of the match will tell a different story.

Despite a strong effort in which the Blue Streaks worked hard, the Wenzlers Warriors found themselves on the short end of a 2-0 defeat at Case Western Reserve University on Wednesday evening.

It was a beautiful, overcast evening at DiSanto Field, with some great scenery. The name of the game for the night was outworking the Spartans. That work ethic would be needed from the get-go, as an extremely quickly-paced game ensued out of the gate.

In the opening two minutes, Jaden Wright got through an opening, firing a shot right at CWRU goalkeeper Bradley Winter. A few minutes later, Winter needed to drop to make a second save, as Hayden Haffner fired a shot from the left hand side of the box on his first touch off balance. Overall, JCU moved the ball very well in the opening stages, playing the ball in and out of channels very well to keep CWRU moving.

No other threatening shots on goal ensued early, as both teams progressed into the attacking areas, but could not generate any potent opportunities. That is, until the 26th minute.

John Carroll lost the ball in the attacking third, and CWRU's Phillip Washington jumped on it, laying it off to Lukas Dalakis. The senior from Vienna, Virginia fired a beautiful strike from 25 yards out into the left side of the net past the outstretched glove of JCU's Dominic Grobler.

Two minutes later, the Spartans tried to add another, as the ball floated across the middle. A slight touch by Kellan Landefeld was saved by the leg of Grobler. All was relatively quiet again until the final minute of the half. A beautiful John Carroll free kick looked to portend trouble, but the CWRU defenders kept the ball out of harm's way.

Overall, it was a good opening half for John Carroll, but the Spartans capitalized on a short lapse in judgment by JCU and proved to be very good structurally.

The Blue Streaks started the second half very well, with a lot of pressure in the CWRU half, at last starting to break down CWRU's backline. In the 52nd minute, JCU earned a corner kick, as a shot from a distance following a great build up was blocked. A few minutes later, Wright smashed a shot off the crossbar outside of the 18. Things continued to pick up in the 57th minute, with JCU earning solid chances and starting to shift the game in its favor.

Wright again threatened in the 69th minute. The veteran got contact eight yards from goal, but it just floated over the goal. And the soccer gods seemed to put their thumbs on the scale soon after. As in the 80th minute, Ohta Kamiya got a through ball on the left and squared it across to Sean Wilson, who slipped it nicely into the bottom right corner.

Looking at the team stats, John Carroll dominated in shots, 16-8, though CWRU finished with more shots on goal, 6-3. Fouls were even, and only one yellow card was issued.

Next Up
The non-conference finale will certainly be a doozy for John Carroll. The Blue Streaks will host Calvin University in a 6 pm match, looking for the program's first win over the Knights since 2007.
