Steve Fuelling Introduced As JCU's New Head Cross Country/Assistant Track & Field Coach
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS - The JCU Cross Country/Track & Field program will be bringing on a new and exciting member for the coaching staff.

Steve Fuelling has been named the new Head Cross Country/Assistant Track & Field coach at John Carroll University, as announced by Director of Athletics and Vice President for Athletics & Student Engagement Brian Polian '97.

"I am excited to add Stephen Fuelling to the John Carroll Cross Country/Track & Field program," exclaimed Polian. "His willingness to lead and knowledge of the sport will help this program grow and continue to be successful now and in the future."

"I want to thank the student-athletes, Daniel Tutskey and Brian Polian for their trust in me and this opportunity," mentioned Fuelling. "It was evident throughout the interview process that John Carroll University is a special place with great culture and community."

Fuelling graduated from Grand Valley State University in 2013, where he was a part of the cross country/track & field program as a student-athlete, which led to him earning his master's degree from Boise State University from 2016-2018 as an assistant coach.

Fuelling gained Division I coaching experience at both Temple and the University of Illinois, as well as Boise State. While assisting at Boise State, the men would win their first Mountain West cross country championship in school history and the women would place as high as 6th at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

Fuelling then went on to be the Head Cross Country/Assistant Track & Field coach at Academy of Art University in San Francisco, where he coached several All-Americans at the NCAA Division II level, including NCAA Mile & 1500m champion, James Young. He was also a part of four top-20 NCAA team finishes at Academy of Art and was named USTFCCCA West Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2020 and 2021.

After spending three seasons at Academy of Art, Fuelling was named to the coaching staff at the University of San Francisco in August 2021. Fuelling elevated his runners to compete at the NCAA 1st Round Championships in track & field, as well as racing to multiple First-Team All WCC Cross Country honors.

After 11 years of coaching at both the NCAA Division I and II levels, Fuelling is excited to come into a strong culture and make a positive impact on the student-athletes to sustain that success for John Carroll Cross Country/Track & Field.

"I'm excited to build off of the tremendous foundation that Kyle Basista and Daniel Tutskey have laid here," says Fuelling. "Coach Tutskey's vision and values for the program aligned with my thinking. I'm ready to get started."

Coach Daniel Tutskey, Director of Cross Country/Track & Field is thrilled to be adding Fuelling onto the staff at JCU and is looking forward to the student-athletes being able to learn under him.

"I'm excited to welcome Stephen Fuelling to the John Carroll family," mentioned Tutskey. "His expertise, dedication and experience will drive our program to new heights. It was evident during the search process that Stephen possessed the qualities that our athletes at John Carroll University will thrive under."

As the cross country season is starting to roll into October, Fuelling is looking forward to what this group has in store for 2024 and beyond.
