Women's Soccer Gets Back in Win Column, Beating Farmingdale State

DALLAS, Pa. – An early score was all the Blue Streaks needed to get back in the win column.

In the first of two games at the Cougar Classic played on the campus of Misericordia University, John Carroll Women's Soccer got off the bus and grabbed a goal in the 19th minute, the eventual game winner.

The Blue Streaks' 1-0 win over Farmingdale State College advances the team to 2-1 on the young season.

From the get-go, JCU's offense came out swinging. Meredith Coloian tabbed the game's first shot in the third minute. Not long after, Emily Patrzyk made the goalie do some work. Lucy Altieri got in on the offense soon after with a shot on goal.

Madeline Martin turned away the Rams' first chance in the 16th minute. Just a few minutes later, JCU's counterattack revved up.

A JCU cornerkick in the 19th minute bounded around the box, bouncing all over. Coloian and Kathryn Shaffer both tried to corral shots. After Shaffer fired a shot point blank off an FSC player, Coloian handled the ball and masterfully slotted a shot low left before the goalie could react.

Looking to keep his charges fresh in anticipation of tomorrow afternoon's match, Marich applied substitutions smartly and liberally.

After an Altieri shot in the 30th minute, FSC countered with a corner and a shot on net, which Martin turned away. The rest of the half elapsed without much incident, leaving JCU on top, 1-0.

In the early goings of the second stanza, Sara Gennuso and Emma West slotted shots on goal. JCU got a couple of cornerkicks in the 56th minute, but nothing came of the chances. After a couple of off-target FSC opportunities, JCU got a chance of its own in the 67th minute on a Shaffer shot on goal. Patrzyk forced the FSC keeper to make a save in the 71st minute, too.

The teams managed a few chances in the final 20 minutes, though there were as many yellow cards as there were shots on goal. Despite JCU's best efforts to add an insurance goal, the Rams kept the advantage to one. But in the end, one goal would be enough to decide the contest.

A total of Blue Streaks saw the pitch today, with only Shaffer and Martin playing for the full 90. The sophomore keeper posted her second shutout of the campaign, tallying three saves. Coloian's goal marked the third of her collegiate career.
