Men's Basketball Cruises Past Comets, Winning 6th Straight

Will Yontek's career day propelled the Blue Streaks on the road

BEXLEY, Ohio – On a snowy Saturday afternoon the Blue Streaks made the two-and-a-half hour trip to Capital for a road Ohio Athletic Conference showdown.

The second trip to the state's capital in four days yielded the Blue Streaks' sixth straight victory.

The Blue Streaks never trailed in this one, and despite several comeback attempts by the Comets, it was John Carroll that came out on top, 82-68.

Will Yontek came into today's game having never scored a single point in the Capital Center. That quickly changed, as the senior forward scored the Blue Streaks' first eight points of the game. Capital kept it close, answering all of Yontek's scores until a Brandon Rose pull up jumper and a David Gentry layup put the Streaks up five. Capital responded with a three, but soon after, Rose knocked down one of his own.

A Luke Frazier jumper set John Carroll ahead 24-18, but a Comet three paired with a layup and one knotted the score with six-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first. The half finished with the teams exchanging layups and mid-range jumpers. The Blue Streaks enjoyed a slight advantage thanks to a pair of late scores from Henry Raynor. John Carroll carried a 38-33 lead into the break.

John Carroll started the second half with a 7-0 run thanks to strong plays by Frazier, Chase Toppin, and Kasey Hunt. Capital hit a three in an attempt to kill the run, but Toppin immediately responded with back-to-back makes from beyond the arc to catapult JCU up by 14. Capital fired back on a 10-0 run to shrink their deficit to just four with 14 minutes left to play.

Coming out of a timeout, Toppin sank his third triple of the half to stop the Capital run. A couple of Frazier and Yontek layups would get the Blue Streaks a double-digit lead. A Yontek layup and one extended the Blue Streaks' lead back to 14. The Comets clawed back within single digits, but a Raynor dunk and a Yontek three (his first of the season) kept the Blue Streaks in firm control.

The Blue Streaks stayed in the driver's seat for the rest of the game, and after a hard fought effort, came away with the 14 point victory.

Will Yontek led all scorers with 28 points in a career day.

After the game, the Saint Ignatius grad noted this is his first time breaking the 20-point mark in his basketball career.

"We have a resilient group and it shows in how we have been playing recently, a new guy steps up every night and that's how we have been stringing wins together," said Yontek.

Luke Frazier added an additional 21 points. Chase Toppin had 13 points.
