Swimming & Diving Opens NCAC Era at Kenyon, as the Owls Sweep Streaks

The Blue Streaks enjoyed some highlights in the first foray into JCU's new conference

GAMBIER, Ohio – The North Coast Athletic Conference era began on Saturday for John Carroll Swimming & Diving.

The Blue Streaks headed to the James A. Steen Aquatic Center to do battle with the Kenyon College Owls.

The Owls, a perpetual NCAC and NCAA powerhouse, earned a sweep in the dual meet. Kenyon conquered the JCU Men's team, 212-84, and won the women's meet, 246-52.

Results

David Miller provided a great highlight in the 100 Backstroke. The sophomore scored a huge win in the event, dashing for a time of 51.11 and a nice victory. Jacob Florio followed up with a strong second-place time of 51.68. 

Also in the backstroke, Audrey Sevald excelled in the 100 Backstroke with a third-place finish of 57.69, as well as another third-place effort in the 200 Backstroke with a mark of 2:07.71.

Alex Gallagher secured a fantastic victory in the 100 Breaststroke. The Hudson native eked out a win by just .03 seconds with a time of 56.08. Ian Hofmann followed up with a third-place effort of 57.54.

Cameron Cook repped the Blue Streaks well in the 200 Free. The Fredericksburg, Virginia native tapped the wall in 1:40.49 for a silver effort. 

In the fly events, Michael Vertikoff shined. The first year from Hilliard Davidson High School thrived in the 100 Butterfly with a runner-up time of 50.84. The rookie also earned a mark of 1:55.41, good for third place. 

Ella Muzychak excelled on the distance side of things with a third-place time of 10:49.23 in the 1000 Free and a fifth-place time of 5:19.42 in the 500 Free. Sam Kmet enjoyed solid swims in the 500 Free (4:51.14) and the 1000 Free (10:07.27) to lead JCU's men's distance swimmers. 

In the relays, the Blue Streaks' 200 Medley Men's Relay provided a highlight with a second-place effort. Florio, Gallagher, Vertikoff, and Branch combined for a time of 1:32.23. Also on the men's side, the Blue Streaks snagged third in the 400 Free Relay, as Cook, Dominic Falcon, Kyle Priset, and Branch worked together for a time of 3:08.39.

Next Up

John Carroll will host the annual Alumni Meet during Homecoming Weekend on October 25 at 10 am at the Johnson Natatorium.
