Men's Soccer Picks Up Important Home Victory over OWU

The Blue Streaks burst out for 3 goals in a much-needed victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Tonight was just what John Carroll Men's Soccer needed.

With decidedly mixed results in North Coast Athletic Conference in the first four games, to the tune of a 1-2-1 mark, the Blue Streaks needed a win to stay in the hunt for tournament contention.

John Carroll did just that, with a decisive 3-1 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University at Don Shula Stadium.

The triumph marked JCU's first three-goal game in a month, occurring at exactly the right time. Overall, it was certainly one of the most cohesive efforts the Blue Streaks have put together this season.

The teams had runs of the flank early. Zalan Onodo grazed the crossbar in the early going, nearly making the visitors pay for not clearing a JCU centering pass well. Dylan Halm also cut inside to Onodi in the 24th minute, but OWU's defense again stood tough.

In the 27th minute, Rafa De La Barrera fired down the field before slotting the ball left to Onodi. The Saint Ignatius grad centered it back to Sava Crnjak,  who tapped it just forward to De La Barrera. The Wildcat took a couple touches and made magic, placing a gorgeous shot to the keeper's right.

The goal had plenty of significance as the first of the game, but moreso for two reasons. First, it marked the first of the Clevelander's career. Secondly, it marked the first time since September 17 vs. Penn State Behrend that the Blue Streaks scored an assisted goal.

The spitfire of a match was just getting going, though, as Ohio Wesleyan punched back. Gabe O'Reilly sent forward a long, arching pass that went up the left side to Rowan Kriebel. The Battling Bishop beat the defending Blue Streak in a physical 50/50 ball and finished it off for the 1-1 tie.

JCU avoided disaster soon after with a hustle play, averting what looked to be a surefire OWU goal. Carter Adams made a heroic goal line clearance.

In the final minute, John Carroll scored the eventual game-winner in the definition of never giving up late in the half. Adams sent the ball forward from the back to Patrick Bohan on a pass low to the ground. Bohan tapped to Andrew Massucci, who made a leaping touch. In charged Dante Rajaie. The freshman from Pataskala, Ohio chested the ball and slotted the ball past the keeper low left with just 6.4 seconds left.

The effort was nothing less than stellar. However, the 2-1 lead seemed not so sure at halftime with the Battling Bishops giving the hosts everything they could muster.

The match seemed much more in hand when John Carroll marked down an insurance goal early in the second half.

In the 52nd minute, De La Barrera fired a free kick into the teeth of the OWU defense, which headed the ball out, but not away from harm. The ball pingponged to the Blue Streaks, and Onodi slashed it ahead to an open Dylan Halm. The Revere grad did the rest, rocketing a shot that nutmegged the keeper.

Owen Szucs needed to make three saves in the second half, but the Blue Streaks were not going to relent this match. Not tonight.

"I'm incredibly proud of our team's performance tonight," said Head Coach Dejan Mladenovic '06, '25G. "They battled for 90 minutes and never stopped competing. The effort, togetherness, and resilience they showed reflect everything we want our program to stand for."
