Football Dominates Fighting Scots in Festive Homecoming Victory

The Blue Streaks rolled from start to finish, dominating on the ground

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – On a beautiful, festive Homecoming and Hall of Fame Weekend, John Carroll Football rolled to a lopsided victory over the College of Wooster.

The JCU offense dominated from the start and the defense limited the Fighting Scots to little success.

The Blue Streaks head into the bye week with a 6-0 North Coast Athletic Conference record, 7-1 overall. Two games remain after the week off.

"It was great to be back on campus and see so many alumni on Homecoming," said Head Coach Jeff Behrman '95. "We were glad to honor thw 1965 and 1969 Football teams as well as Ted Uritus '62, it was important for us to recognize them. Opening Dave Rastoka Hall of Fame Hallway was great as well. It was a great day all-around on campus and in the community. I'm proud of the team and players. They prepared really hard this week. A lot of people would have looked at our win this week and think this would be a letdown. That's not what our team is about. They know every opportunity is not guaranteed for them and they're going to take advantage of it."

Postgame Interviews

The Blue Streaks won the coin toss and took the ball, marching down the field with confidence. John Carroll converted a fourth down on a Quincy Newsom catch en route to paydirt. Newsom punched it right up the middle on a 5-yard score.

The hosts added to the lead with a 5-play, 52-yard drive capped off by a Keller Moten 9-yard touchdown. Wooster fought back with a quick-strike, 80-yard TD pass to narrow the deficit to 14-7.

Late in the third quarter, John Carroll answered with a strong 8-play, 75-yard march. In a similar play with an identical result, Moten dashed into the end zone with 8 seconds left to set the score at 21-7 JCU after the first quarter.

The passing attack kept humming in the second quarter. Shane Lindstrom hauled in a rainbow pass from Semptimphelter on a 47-yard pitch and catch to up the lead further.

John Carroll's defense made a nice fourth down stop to give the ball back to the offense in plus territory. Just three plays later, Jenkins punched it in from 1 yard out to set the score at 35-7.

For good measure, John Carroll added one more score before halftime. Nick Semptimphelter scrambled 18 yards to the endzone, reaching top speed on a great run. And so, JCU stood ahead at halftime, 42-7.

The halftime stats tell the tale: John Carroll gained an impressive 391 offensive yards to Wooster's 124, of which 80 came on one play.

John Carroll continued to dominate the line of scrimmage in the third quarter. Newsom dashed in for his second touchdown of the day, upping the lead to 49-7. On JCU's next drive, Nemo Jenkins set up a 2-yard touchdown run with a 49-yard scamper. With 7:30 left in the third quarter, the hosts enjoyed a 56-7 lead.

Early in the fourth quarter, Nikko Georgiou flipped a quick screen to Nico McBride and the first year did the rest, pushing his way into the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown reception. Later in the quarter, John Carroll completed the scoring with a 24-yard Colin Schuler field goal.

John Carroll enjoyed a complete effort from start to finish, including a whopping 378 rushing yards. John Carroll racked up an impressive
633 total yards of offense. Four Blue Streaks finished with 50 or more rushing yards and four different players tallied rushing scores.

"The whole running back room has built a bond with the offensive line," said Jenkins. "It's more than chemistry, it's a bond and a brotherhood. They know what needs to happen. They trust us and we trust them. That's what it's all about, trust."

Semptimphelter finished 13-of-15 for 222 yards, a passing touchdown, and a rushing touchdown. With the passing TD, he advances to a tie for fourth in JCU history with 60, tied with today's color analyst on the broadcast,
Anthony Moeglin. With five catches today, Tyren Montgomery is now six receptions away from breaking newly-inducted Hall of Famer Frank Ross' single season reception record (69).

JCU's defense played quite well. Hunter Kanotz led the way with 6 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Kenny Grobolsek followed closely with 5 tackles and 1 TFL. The entire defense played well, particularly the defensive line, as Kanotz noted.

"It comes from our first [group] of the defenisve line with Waz [Tommy Wasinksi], Ben [Day] and Joe [Thimons] gelling with the second group of me, Ivory, and Nate. Watching the film and saying, 'I see what you're doing here,' and gathering tips and tricks from them about how to get better."
