Women's Soccer Concludes Homecoming with Great Win over OWU

Emily Patrzyk netted a pair of early goals to guide the Blue Streaks to victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – Head Coach Michael Marich has been preaching to his players about starting fast in games this season.

The words of wisdom have paid off, as JCU has scored in the first 16 minutes in four of five home wins, including Emily Patryzk's goal in the third minute tonight.

The early goal powered John Carroll Women's Soccer to a 2-0 conquest of Ohio Wesleyan University. With the victory, the Blue Streaks stand alone atop the North Coast Athletic Conference standings with 12 points and a 4-1 record.

"Our defense played so well tonight," Patryzk emphasizes. "We played relaxed and when they saw an open ball for anyone to run up to, we played it well."

Patrzyk took advantage of miscommunication between a pair of OWU defenders in the third minute. A smart pass ahead by defender Julia Niehaus set up Patrzyk in good positioning to split a pair of Battling Bishops. After taking a touch, the senior tapped in the game-opening goal.

A quiet stretch ensued before the Blue Streaks struck again.

Patrzyk worked up the left flank against an OWU defender. Working her magic, the Twinsburg native beat the Battling Bishop with a cheeky move, and lofted a gorgeous left-footed shot over the head of the keeper.

The Battling Bishops picked up the pace, building up from the back to the midfield in an attempt to create chances. But John Carroll thwarted all attempts.

JCU stood ahead at half by two goals, despite OWU having 5 shots to JCU's two. But Madeline Martin only had to make one save.

The Battling Bishops' most dangerous chance of the evening came in the 57th minute. An OWU corner kick led to a very good chance that Martin turned away but could not scoop up. The Battling Bishops furiously tried to kick in the rebound, but JCU turned away the chance with an excellent team save.

Neither team saw many chances until late when the Battling Bishops made a move. JCU turned away a good-looking opportunity in the 84th minute and Martin made a nice save in the 86th minute.

For the match, OWU stood ahead in shots, 9-3, including 4-3 in shots on goal. But JCU took advantage of its chances to win the day.

"I think tonight we responded really well," said Patrzyk. "The energy keeps getting higher and higher and it is just getting more positive every single day."
