Julia Gulla won medalist honors while breaking her own record again

WILLOUGHBY HILLS, Ohio – Julia Gulla did it again.

The first year Blue Streak soared on the second day of the JCU Fall Invitational, roaring for medalist honors for the fourth time this season.

With Gulla guiding the way, John Carroll Women's Golf secured fourth place in the 2-day, 10-team tournament at Manakiki Golf Course in Willoughby Hills. JCU finished with a final scoreline of 345-343-688.

Julia Gulla notched a 79 on Saturday, entering the second day behind by four strokes off of Westminster's Katie Rose Rankin, who carded a whopping seven birdies on the opening day.

But cool as the other side of the pillow, Gulla adjusted to the extremely fast greens, made more difficult by a recent lack of rain. The Nordonia grad putted with impressive efficiency, avoiding any three-putts on Sunday. As a result, Gulla scored an amazing even-par 72.

Not only did Gulla garner the medalist trophy by five strokes thanks to her remarkable effort, the Sagamore Hills native shaved off a stroke from her previous program record of 73, set back on September 7.

As Head Coach Missy Gedeon noted, Gulla "has worked hard to learn and manage this extremely difficult course. She has unbelievable control over her distance. The key for her had to be the putting. The greens were running fast and true on Sunday, and she mastered the difficult greens. She had great concentration and evaluation of each shot."

Alexandra Yaeger stood as the second finisher for the Blue Streaks. The Naperville, Illinois native opened with an 85 on Saturday, including a nice birdie to finish out her opening round. The first year capped things off with an 87 on Sunday. She tied for 15th in the field.

Kyah Huckleberry started off the weekend with a 91 on Saturday, including a birdie on No. 13. The Ashland native improved by one stroke to earn a 90 on Sunday.

Hannah Prince carded a 90 for starters and then a 94 to finish. Madison Maxwell opened with a 101 in the first round before cutting off a few strokes for a 94 on Sunday.

The John Carroll Gold Team also competed, beating out Ohio Wesleyan.

Lauren Roof guided the squad with a strong effort this weekend. The Magnificat grad kicked off the tournament with an 89 and then fired up an 87 on the second day. Erin McCaffrey also excelled for starters, shooting an 87 on Saturday before coming down a bit with a 97 on Sunday.

Meredith Thompson (96-94-190), Irena Steffas (98-102-200), and Amanda Millis (100-106-206) rounded things out for the squad.
