Patrzyk's Goal Sends Women's Soccer Past Kenyon to NCAC Tournament Final

The Blue Streaks will play for the NCAC crown on Sunday at 12 pm at Don Shula Stadium

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — In their inaugural season as members of the North Coast Athletic Conference, the Blue Streaks took down perennial content Kenyon College in the NCAC Semifinal to move on to the NCAC Final.

After earning the #1 seed, the Blue Streaks were met by th the #4 seed Kenyon College Owls on Thursday evening. This matchup marked the 12th meeting between these two schools, the first in postseason play. Entering this game, the teams met once previously this year with Kenyon taking the win, 1-0.

Emily Patrzyk was the hero for the Blue Streaks on Thursday evening as her goal late in the second half gave the Blue Streaks their first NCAC tournament victory, 1-0.

The Blue Streaks came out aggressive, as in the sixth minute Brooke Berkowitz captured a crucial takeaway in Kenyon's side of the field before delivering a powerful shot that went just high. Shortly thereafter, the Blue Streaks were given a corner in the 9th minute. The ball was delivered beautifully by Meredith Coloian this time finding the head of Berkowitz, who had a go at the net, but was denied by Kenyon's keeper Ariel Kite.

Later in the 13th minute, the Blue Streaks were seen attacking again, with Abby Walker delivering a powerful shot from 30 yards out that ricocheted off the top of the crossbar and out of bounds. After a throw-in deep in Kenyon's half, in the 28th minute, Patrzyk was able to avoid a few Owls before missing just high over the net. In the 35th minute, the Owls arguably had their best opportunity of the first half. After a foul deep in the Blue Streaks' end, the Owls received a free kick, which was fired by Emily Copeland and saved by the Blue Streak keeper Madeline Martin.

After a half dominated by the Blue Streaks, the Kenyon College defense was able to stand tall, leaving the score knotted at zeroes.

Coming out of the intermission, the Owls garnered multiple opportunities early in the second half. In the 46th minute, a shot was delivered from Kenyon's Jenna Michel, but it was smothered by Martin. A minute later in the 47th, another opportunity for Kenyon arose, this time it was Addison Szollosi, who missed just high over the crossbar.

John Carroll was able to respond quickly with a scoring opportunity of their own. In the 53rd minute, Patrzyk drove a shot into the lower right corner which was pushed away by Kite, granting a corner kick for the Blue Streaks. Off the corner kick, John Carroll's Alli Malinky was able to get a head on the ball which was once again saved by Kite.

After a few minutes of back and forth action in the middle of the field, in the 69th minute, Patrzyk delivered a beautiful through ball to Gracie Villwock, whose shot missed right.

Kenyon drove into Blue Streak territory in the 77th minute. After the ball was bouncing around in the middle of the field, Copeland corralled it and delivered a sharp shot into the lower right corner of the net which was covered by Martin.

In the 81st minute, the Blue Streaks had the ball in Kenyon's half when Coloian delivered a beautiful through ball to Patrzyk. After a fantastic move, she delivered a curling shot into the top left corner which found the back of the net.

"I was looking to cross it at first," stated Patrzyk. "But then I saw the goal was open…I'll take a shot and it went in."

Patrzyk's late heroics punched John Carroll's ticket to the NCAC Tournament Final.

"The energy is high when we are playing at home, we believe that it is our biggest strength," said Patrzyk. "I know for me, and all of the other seniors, we came in today playing like it was our last. I know we have to play every game like that if we want to keep winning."

The Blue Streaks are back in action on Sunday, November 9 at 12 pm vs. Denison at Don Shula Stadium for the NCAC Championship and a ticket to the NCAA Tournament.
