Men's Basketball Picks Up First NCAC Win, Beating Wooster on the Road

The Blue Streaks built an early lead and never looked back

WOOSTER, Ohio -- For the first time in John Carroll Men's Basketball history, the Blue Streaks have won a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup as a member of the league.

The Blue Streaks took an early lead and never looked back on the way to a 92-73 road victory.

"You just gotta play one day at a time, we've had some struggles recently, proud of the way we didn't let those affect us today," said senior Sean Collins.

John Carroll wasted no time, as Kyle Irwin buried a three just 14 seconds into the game to give the Blue Streaks a lead, one that would never go away. A trio of free throws by Luke Chicone and a three by Aidan Fitzgerald had the Streaks rolling. Just a few minutes later a layup from Collins put the visitors up double digits.
Wooster notched a run coming out of the media timeout to cut the deficit to just one. The Blue Streaks did not waver, as they responded with a 12-2 run ending with a Kasey Hunt layup to push the lead back to 11.

For the remainder of the half, the lead floated around 10 with the Scots occasionally being able to stack a few possessions to slightly cut the lead. The Blue Streaks held strong and carried a 7-point lead into the break despite shooting just 5-of-22 from beyond the arc in the opening half.

Wooster came out of the half and scored on their first possession, but makes from inside from Hunt and Chicone as well as another Irwin three quickly ballooned the lead back to double digits. The Blue Streaks quickly blew the game open as just a few possessions later a tough and 1 from Tyree Turner had JCU's lead at 22.

As the teams traded buckets, an impressive put back from Chicone moved the lead to 24, which would be the Blue and Gold's biggest lead of the game.

The hosts managed to get back within 16 but a three from Mike Lamirand with three minutes to go was the dagger as after that both teams began to empty the benches. Ryan Ioppolo closed out the scoring for John Carroll with a three of his own as the Streaks headed to the locker room with their first conference win of the season.

Once again it was an impressive defensive effort from John Carroll that led them to victory as they forced 29 turnovers compared to just 11 of their own.

Luke Chicone led the way with a game high 21 points and 9 assists to go along with 5 steals on the defensive end

"It feels good to get our first conference win under our belt. Now we just gotta stack these days and continue to get better, still have a lot of games left," said Chicone.

Jack Zapolnik chipped in 13 of his own thanks in part to a 3/6 day from beyond the arc.

Brandon Rose was a crucial piece of today's win, adding 11 points as well as a career high 6 steals.

"These wins always feel good, but this one just feels better," stated Rose, "We haven't played our best recently, but we got the job done on the road and were able to secure our first conference win."
