Thomas Lunt guided the way with a runner-up effort

ROCHESTER – Every December, John Carroll Men's Wrestling makes the annual trek to New York for the RIT Invitational.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed a solid day, finishing ninth of 14 teams present.

John Carroll tallied three placers: Thomas Lunt notched second place, Brett Stanley snagged fifth, and Aiden Ashburn tabbed sixth.

Lunt led the way for the Blue Streaks with a nice showing at his heavyweight class. The veteran rolled with a fall in 3:51 and a 16-1 tech fall in a longer match that lasted 6:51. An 11-3 major decision sent him on to the semifinals. Lunt met the challenge with a 7-2 decision. The star's luck ran out there, losing via a first-period fall to host RIT in the finals.

Stanley continued his strong winter at 125 pounds. The Broadview Heights, Ohio began with a 9-2 decision before firing up a 12-0 major decision. A 4-2 defeat to the eventual champion dropped him to the consolation bracket, and the veteran lost an 11-3 MD before getting a medical forfeit win for fifth.

Ashburn did well at 174 pounds. He pitched two shutouts with a pair of falls for starters. The Westlake native earned an 8-0 major decision next to propel into the semifinals. His offensive prowess stalled there in a 3-0 loss. A pair of forfeits dropped him to sixth.
