Men's Basketball Secures Victory Against Capital In Front Of Home Crowd

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS – With a great crowd at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center for Alumni Day, John Carroll Men's Basketball kept the train rolling.

The Blue Streaks fought to a fourth straight win, coming away with a 77-70 decision.

John Carroll remains in prime positioning for the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with a 13-3 mark in league play, tied with Mount Union in first.

Capital corralled an early lead, bursting out of the gates with hot 3-point shooting. At the first media timeout, Capital enjoyed a 21-13 lead. Unfazed, the Blue Streaks went to work on offense, with a pretty triple by Luke Frazier snagging a 28-26 lead near the midpoint of the half.

JCU also started to clamp down on defense, personified on the following possession by Sean Collins, who blocked Capital shots on back-to-back possessions. John Carroll started stealing possessions from the Comets with strong defensive efforts. John Carroll's efforts in the post started to wear down the Comets, with quickness in transitions opening space. A last-second Collins layup set the score at 40-36 at the break.

Brandon Rose's efforts in the first half also must be mentioned, as the Gilmour grad notched 11 points and 5 rebounds.

But the Comets remained in the ballgame. In the first five minutes of the second half, the Blue Streaks' lead stretched to nine points, 49-40, the largest lead of the game to that point. But then, Capital fired out to an 11-3 run to get within one. As the physicality increased, so did the intensity in the gym. The Comets kept it close, seeming to have enough answers.

John Carroll did not waver on offense, staying to the game plan of feeding the ball down low to the bigs and letting Frazier shoot open looks. The senior sank one such opportunity with 90 seconds left, critically getting the lead to two possessions.

After a full timeout, JCU got a critical stop. While Capital did get a couple threes, it was not enough. John Carroll made the needed free throws to seal the deal late.

Henry Raynor led all JCU scores with 17 points, finishing with 14 rebounds, as well. Luke Frazier was close behind with 16 points. Brandon Rose finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

Brandon Rose had high praise for his teammates coming off of this win against Capital as the sophomore scored 14 points and eight rebounds in 28 minutes for the Blue Streaks.

"Capital is a great team, so we knew we had to place a lot of emphasis on defense," mentioned Rose. "Every day in practice we're all finding each other. Practices are harder than the games sometimes. From one to the last person on the bench it takes everyone to win a game like this, so it felt special.

For the Blue Streaks, the defense translates to the offense and that was the key factor in winning a game like this in front of a packed home crowd.
