Strong Second Half Lifts Blue Streaks in "Home Opener"

CLEVELAND -- After winter weather struck Northeast Ohio, the John Carroll Men's Lacrosse team was able to start their season off with a challenge against the reputable Colorado College at Cleveland State's Krenzler Field on Saturday.

The Blue Streaks got a 15-13 victory over the Tigers.

The first period was a heavyweight battle, with Carroll taking momentum early on, courtesy of a hat trick scored by Braden Zarek.

Colorado answered consistently, keeping the game tight throughout the first period. The game was chippy from the start with a plentiful amount of penalties being handed out and a lot of energy being exchanged between both teams.

The second period began with Colorado getting the upper hand, scoring 4 unanswered goals. However, the John Carroll defense stepped up later in the second, putting up a great fight against the fast paced Colorado offense.

Emotions were high with coaches on both sides showing frustration calls. Although the visible stress, appropriate discussion was held and no penalties against either coach were assessed.

Due to multiple failed clears by Carroll, the Colorado College offense had consistent opportunities to score and kept their lead, but the end of the second period was exciting for the Streaks, with JCU building momentum off a couple goals.

The Blue Streaks momentum carried into the third period with them taking the lead early on into the quarter. Head Coach Joe Rauenstrauch and Assistant Coach Tim Edwards made notable adjustments to the defense, which helped the Streaks gain a lead in the second half. Although there was pushback from Colorado, JCU kept a consistent one-goal lead throughout, until the final minute when sophomore Braden Zarek capitalized on an opportunity to put the Streaks up by 2 goals.

The fourth started off slow, but Josh Lombardo brought the energy with an impressive goal that got the Blue Streaks rowdy. John Carroll also had a noticeable increase in time of possession, trying to run out the clock with their slim lead.

The end of the fourth was met with multiple conduct fouls being handed to Colorado College in an emotional end to the game. With time dwindling, the Colorado College players continued to put their last physical efforts, desperately trying to even the score.

"Coach Edwards made great adjustments on defense and they truly battled tonight," said Coach Rauenstrauch after the game. "Braden Zarek was incredible tonight and put on an absolute clinic on offense. I couldn't be more proud of this start to the season for our guys."

The Blue Streaks stood their ground and held on, taking the 15-13 win over this impressive Colorado College team. This win brings the confidence the Blue Streaks need moving into the first stretch of their tough schedule this season.
