Women's Tennis Drops Spring Opener to Ashland

WOOSTER – The spring portion of the 2024-25 campaign began indoors on Saturday for John Carroll Women's Tennis.

The Blue Streaks traveled to the Aspen Racquet Club in Wooster, facing off with Ashland University.

John Carroll's spring opener ended in defeat, as JCU lost a 7-0 contest to the Eagles.

The lone victory of the day occurred in the #1 doubles spot. Maddie Kavenagh and Evelyn Deren looked great at #1 doubles, roaring for a decisive 6-2 conquest.

Sarah Sgambati and Madi Davila worked together in the #2 doubles bout, dropped a 6-2 loss. Felicity Kilb and Emma Smith lost by an identical 6-2 score at #3 doubles. And so in winning two of the three doubles matches, Ashland earned the doubles team point.

Kavenagh experienced a battle at the #1 singles spot. The sophomore won the first set via a thrilling 7-6 tiebreaker. But her foe rebounded with back-to-back 6-2 wins to get the victory. Deren also battled at #2 singles, but dropped a 6-2, 6-4 loss. Sgambati lost at #3, 6-1, 6-1.

Kolb fought at #4 in a 3-set war. The junior dropped the opening set, 2-6, before forcing a third set with a 6-2 win. The Illinois native lost the deciding set by the narrowest of margins, 10-8. Davila battled fiercely at #5, as after falling in the opening set, 6-2, she lost a 7-6 second set, as the tiebreaker was decided very closely, 8-6. Caroline Chandler rounded things out at #6, losing 6-1, 6-0.
