Offensive Eruption Secures Road Win at Albion for Women's Lacrosse

A 7-0 run in the second half helped stretch JCU's win streak to seven

ALBION, Mich. – The strong start marches on for John Carroll Women's Lacrosse.

The Blue Streaks never trailed in a wire-to-wire win at Albion College on Saturday, conquering the Britons in a clear win.

John Carroll handled the three-and-a-half-hour commute with ease, advancing to 7-0 on the year thanks to a 20-9 decision over Albion.

Olivia Hanulak provided a spark in the early goings, as the veteran scored two of the game's first three goals. The latter tally pushed JCU in front for a 2-1 lead at 9:10 of the first quarter. That advantage held the rest of the way.

A pair of Kathleen Cagney goals and a Kenzie Krom goal on the woman-up ensured JCU possessed a 5-2 advantage after the first quarter. But the Britons did not make it easy in the second quarter.

Efficiency was the name of the game for Albion, as the Britons did not get many shots, but took advantage of the chances they earned. Riley Knapp opened the stanza with a goal, but Albion fired home two straight to trim the lead to two. Albion answered an Anna Spitzer goal, but JCU provided a 3-0 run to fire ahead by five goals, thanks to Abby Cassidy, Mary Grace Godleski, and Spitzer. While Albion did get the final goal of the half, a 10-6 lead felt adequate for JCU.

While Albion did draw first blood in the second half, John Carroll dominated overall. A 7-0 stretch over an 11-minute timeframe spanning from midway through the third to early in the fourth made it a laugher. Hanulak tallied two, but it was fully a team effort, with goals scored by Daisy Thompson (first of the season), Spitzer, Krom, Cassidy, and Cagney.

Albion did score a couple goals in the fourth, but each was answered. Annalise Caulfield and Vanessa Stevens both authored goals for the first time this season, another bright spot in a complete team effort.

Another example of JCU's unselfishness was that 14 of JCU's 20 goals were assisted. Three of Spitzer's team-best 6 points came on assists. Lauren Schwartz tied for the team lead with 3 helpers. Speaking of prolific playmaking, Hanulak tied for Spitzer with 6 points (4 goals, 2 assists). Cassidy and Cagney each achieved hat tricks. Both Vivian Rung and Ellie Fleischer registered their first assist of the season.

Cassidy's strong day was not limited to just offense, as the Medina native accumulate a team-high 6 groundballs and 7 draw controls. Mary Wymard led the way with 3 draw controls, plus 3 groundballs. Rachel Kroeger started the first-half in net before Josephine Lawler took over in the second half, making 2 saves.
