Women's Tennis Fights Past Oberlin in Narrow Victory

JCU won the matchup of future NCAC foes

OBERLIN, Ohio – In a preview of a potential North Coast Athletic Conference rivalry, John Carroll Women's Tennis eked out a win on Saturday.

Heading to Oberlin College for an indoor match, the Blue Streaks eased by the Yeowomen by the narrowest of margins, 4-3^.

The Blue Streaks now stand with a nice 5-2 record on the season, winners of two in a row.

Doubles play provided a strong start, as JCU won the team point by taking two of three matches. Evelyn Deren and Felicity Kolb formed the top duo, cruising to a 6-0 win. Emma Smith and Madi Davila did a strong job, as the all first-year squad squeezed by, 7-5. Caroline Chandler and Zoe Nicholas accepted the lone defeat, 6-3.

With Maddie Kavenagh out, Deren assumed the mantle of responsibility atop the singles lineup. The Northville, Michigan native played well, but her foe did just slightly better. Deren lost in a 6-7 (6-8), 6-7 (4-7) heartbreaker.^

Kolb also needed extra time in her first set, but managed to get a victory, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 conquest at #2. Similarly, Davila needed a tiebreaker win in the opening set, but also emerged victorious in a 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 triumph at #3.

Smith stood strong at #4 singles in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. The #5 and #6 singles did not go JCU's way, but it would be okay in the end. Chandler lost a 5-7, 4-6 match at #5, and Nicholas dropped a 4-6, 6-4, 7-10 loss at #6.
